We are, instead, quite low on a screens per capita basis.

This has everything to do with Cineplex essentially having a monopoly, and a distribution business that isn't much better.

Changing that will absolutely require Competition Bureau and/or Legislative intervention.

For a couple points of comparison, in screens per capita at the national level, The U.S. ranks 6th, while Canada ranks 39th.

Toronto similarly performs well below peer cities around the world in screens per capita.

Some of that is lack of disposable income........but a good chunk of that is lack of diversity of product and venue, weak alternative programming/experience, and other problems such as limited showtimes and poorly thought out pricing.

How Ellis Jacob keeps his job (Cineplex CEO) is beyond me, he's overseen the destruction of his own industry.

Ellis ain't going nowhere pretty much until he decides to retire. There was the thought years back that he was going to retire, but now nobody knows for sure when that's going to come.

And the thing is even if the Competition Bureau came out and said there were anti-competitive practices, the government (of all stripes pretty much) have time and time again intervened when the bureau would make a ruling, then further screwed the bureau by dragging giving them some teeth.

Anyways i'm getting side tracked, but Cineplex isnt really looking at expanding their traditional theatres per se at the moment. They're more more focused on the new Junxion concept and to a degree, Rec Room.

Which is sad in a way, because The Well would've been a perfect spot for a cinema but that ship has long sailed.

I don't disagree with anything above......but would simply add, what sane shareholder or board would let someone who has single-handled diminished their industry (per capita), on a an enormous scale..........continue to run things?

To say there is something wrong w/this picture is to understate the facts by an order of magnitude.

I do feel like movie theatres might work in these large residential retail complexes though. I could watch something from Netflix on my couch, or pull up a classic to watch in my condo screening room, which is slightly bigger. Or go downstairs in a pair of shorts and slides to a big screen theatre experience. If wankers are getting angry about 15min cities, then just build 5min communities. That’s how to get me back in theatres.

Or maybe more of a multipurpose thing, where you could book a private slot for using a game console. I did that when I had friends from out of town visit my place in Toronto; we had a movie room that could also be used for gaming consoles (you just had to bring them yourself).

I feel like theatres could work when they feel like an extension of your amenities, and are part of the community. That’s why these complexes are a real way to go. You’re more likely to give your 9yo a QR code ticket to the theatre and send them downstairs to see a flick with friends, than you would put them on a bus to cross town.
