Toronto & the Olympics

... or maybe we could just settled for a future Out Games, with Liza Minnelli at the closing ceremonies, and call it quits?

"News was just released today about Japan's national bidding rights. It looks like Tokyo is behind in the Japanese race for bidding rights behind Fukuoka. I'm telling you 2016 is opening up for a North American games and Toronto can easily rival Chicago/SF."

Personally, I am hoping for Fukuoka to win. It is one of my favourite cities.

The problem is Fukuoka doesn't have an international profile to warrant it a win, Tokyo does. Germany made the mistake of chosing Leipzig over the likes of Berlin and Munich for the 2012 Olympics. Guess what happened, Leipzig failed to get shortlisted. The reason is because it was too small and had no international profile.

One event I'd like to see come to Toronto is the Special Olympics World Summer Games - it had a huge, positive impact when held in Dublin not just for the city but for the country as various communities outside Dublin hosted national delegations during acclimatisation.

It didn't require much in the way of infrastructure as Dublin had a 82,500 seat stadium (Croke Park) for Opening/Closing ceremonies already and apart from an Olympic pool there's only basic athletics/field sport facilities required.

The 2007 summer games are in China so a 2011 bid could be possible.

Except that we'll probably wind up settling for Lorna Luft...

Imagine if we actually won the 2008 Olympics and how different this city would be right now. All the development on the waterfront and the anticipation leading up to hosting the event, less than 2 years away. Ugh, what could have been!! LOL!
