question to the wise -- is it reasonable to assume that new rental buildings like this would be built with better quality, longer lasting, and lower maintenance materials given that the customer is more sophisticated in demanding that than your typical condo buyer?

I'm not surprised they'd take more care and invest more in a project they are going to hold onto rather than flip to others. Self interest at work.
 
This is how a mix of materials and colour should be done. Not like five St. Joeseph. This building isn't even done but it's looking amazing.

I think you are talking about the wrong building here. You should be comparing this to YC Condos which should have been done like the Livmore.
 
Reminds me of the Globe and Mail building. It looks good, but I'm not sure about he mismatched balcony lengths seen in the picture above.
