Toronto St Clair-Old Weston GO Station | 9.13m | 1s | City of Toronto | Hatch

I was at the station site on Sunday. It’s a great place to drop a body… or at least some industrial waste.

I know this station is supposed to support the nearby high rise development proposals, but access to the streetcar – or anything else right now – is bad.

While true, right now, this work is being done in conjunction with the St. Clair Transportation Masterplan (work will be done at the same time according to my city councillor). Indeed, they already have permits to demolish all of the houses/businesses where the new road will go, and they will be installing the bridge early next year. So that street (union) will actually be an extension of davenport and will connect with Keele to the north, through an extension of Gunns road: https://www.toronto.ca/community-pe...tions/infrastructure-projects/stclairwesttmp/. It will also have a bidirectional multi-use trail that connects with the davenport bike lanes and Gunns Road, which leads to the trail.

So yes, it seems like a weird side-road right now, but once it's done, even without the development planned for this area, it will be a much more lively street.

Yeah, I linked to the transportation master plan. I’m just skeptical it will fully get built; even so connections to St. Clair Avenue and the streetcar in particular will be poor with the station layout.

There’s a chance it can be rethought if it no longer has to serve 12-car trains, but I’m not feeling too hopeful about that.

I'm a little less skeptical than you are. The whole project is being built as one and all at the same time, and even according to the memorandum on the change to UP, they reference the need to close the streetcar during construction due to the implementation of the transportation masterplan. They have also applied for demolition and building permits for it, already.

As per connecting to the streetcar, I agree. The busses (currently at Old Weston loop) will be rerouted to this station. I'm not sure how you could better connect it to the streetcar, though, given that the station obviously has to be next to the streetcar tracks. It is a quick jaunt to either the Keele or the Old Weston stops. The only option would be to put a stop under the bridge - as there are steps that go down from Union to St. Clair, but that seems not feasible given the width of the road (which will be widened, but still).

I'm a bit more optimistic!

I still hate how the City didn't make Davenport/Union continious with Keele St through the St Clair TMP. It's going to create a completely preventable traffic pinch point with cars "making the jog" along Gunns.

You know.....the top job at City Transportation is now open.......plus there's a re-org coming and at least one, maybe 2 new director level jobs........

Sure, it's a bit of a commute..............but just imagine the fun of me chirping in your ear. LOL Oh wait a minute, you get that now w/o the traffic.

🤣

What if they made that little intersection a roundabout? Feel like Doug Fords been talking about these mystical roundabouts, and this seems like it might actually be a good spot to put one, to avoid a bottleneck light.

Apparently, widening of St Clair West under the bridge (Old Weston to Keele) was removed from the TMP in 2023 without Council approval. Councillor Alejandro Bravo is now circulating a petition to have it brought back into the plan by the province/Metrolinx: https://www.alejandrabravo.ca/fix_the_bottleneck

There's also a Metrolinx Open House at the St. Clair/Silverthorn library on Dec 8th

How is this possible? This is an absurd choice if it is true. That widening is absolutely necessary for the area and should be done as part of this project - otherwise it will never be done. The process for that started 13 years ago, and the issue has gotten way worse. It was planned to be done. As a cyclist/driver/pedestrian, that underpass sucks for all road users. As a cyclist, you basically have to go on the sidewalk, because otherwise you'd be run over by a car on the uphill on the underpass due to their impatience. As a driver, it bottlenecks due to the left turn lanes. As a pedestrian, the sidewalks are super narrow and suck.

I will be extremely disappointed if this doesn't go forward. This was approved and part of the plan. When was it removed? How?

Probably thinking they will getting rid of the centre column is "good enough". Along with narrow traffic lanes. Should have a bi-directional cycling lane on the same level as the sidewalk. Maybe a tunnelled sidewalk on the opposite side?

Agreed - I was going to ask, but now think this is way more important, whether they could install a pedestrian path on the west side of the tracks, as well. Otherwise, coming from Mullock, you'd have to walk a very long distance to a light to cross the street to get to the new station. I suspect we'll see lots of people just jay walking over the tracks there once the station is built.

The 185 metre GO platform that will go unused is still being built, with platform canopies and an accessibility platform:

The UP Express platform is longer than other stations, 4 car UP trains can use this station.

This is where I wish Metrolinx would let us in on the larger plans for GO Expansion... because this is confusing, especially the GO platform.
