Ryerson has been one of the best developers in this pocket of the city for a while. I always have high expectations for their building materials. Sheldon Levy always understood the importance of "planting the flowers", even when budgets were tight. Present a high quality image, and the world will return in kind. Cheap out to soften a budget and the bitterness of a low quality product will only deepen with time.

Did anyone think that putting that sign on the SLC was a good idea aesthetically?

Definitely would not have wanted to see the sign on the SLC.
Hope the building they are redoing on Gerard turns out as nice, the plans seemed rather conservative compared to most of their other projects.

Perhaps Ryerson shouldn't have signed an agreement to do so. I think it would have ruined the SLC's aesthetic as well but Ryerson has been acting in bad faith throughout the entire Sam the Recordman sign saga. If they could have destroyed the sign, I'm sure they would have. They should be embarrassed with the half-assed job they have done.

They renegotiated the heritage agreement with relevant parties.

I'd say signing the agreement in the first place and then trying to get out of it was a sign of bad faith. Especially when the design of the SLC never lent itself to having the Sam's sign attached to it. It sounds like Ryerson thought they could pull a fast one on the city by agreeing to preserve the sign when they were planning the SLC and then saying "Oh dear, this just won't work at all" when it was too late to force the university to live up to its obligations and make destroying the sign a necessary fait accompli. The fact they've half-assed the sign at Yonge and Dundas suggests they're not really interested in doing the sign (and the original agreement they signed) justice.
