Costs:
Spadina to Bay (1.4 km) - $67M
Bay to Jarvis (0.7 km) - $46M
Jarvis to Parliament (0.6 km) - $77M
East Bayfront Transit Tunnel/Portal/Tracks - $148M

Funding committed:
$40M for Central Waterfront - Spadina to Bay (0.7-0.8 km)
$20M for East Bayfront - Jarvis to Parliament

3 phasing options for Spadina to Bay:
1. Yo-Yo Ma/Music Garden to Simcoe St.
2. HtO Park to York St.
3. Rees St. to Bay St.

Schedule:
Central Waterfront Segment - early 2011 to 2013
East Bayfront Segment - early 2011 to 2012

So is this to say that the Spadina to Bathurst section is being left out? If so, good. It's already gorgeous and the money should be directed elsewhere.

Why don't they test the scenarios out on The Queensway, just to see how each holds up?
 
Why not just have the roadside track bricked and the inside track and area under the tree as grass. The EMS vehicle isn't going to be able to switch lanes without driving on the grass with this current plan and the amount of grass almost doesn't make it worth the effort.

What I don't understand is why wouldn't an EMS vehicle use the bicycle path (Martin Goodman Trail) since the streetcars can't pull over and bicycles can. If bollards are to be used to keep vehicles out, couldn't collapsible, breakaway, or automatic bollards be used?

Breakaway ... I can tell you what happens then. They would break frequently every Friday night. Collapsible would just encourage every Tom, Dick, and Harry. Automatic? Probably a bad idea ...:

We definitely need retractable bollards now. It is like a Darwinian trap for drivers who don't read signs.
It might be ... but it would likely cause more suspensions in service, than simply putting up a sign.

And if it happens frequently enough, it's not the drivers who are at fault ... it suggests a systemic design flaw.

A flexible bollard could be used so that the EMS vehicles could easily go over them, as they use the bicycle path to get to the emergency and not have to use the tracks.

And if some idiot decides to use the bike path, it will give them a wake-up.

This might be a stupid question, but are the current Queens Quay tracks staying where they currently are (with the streetscape improvements occuring around them)? Thanks
 
^ Yes. That's the beauty of this conversion. They're "simply" closing the south lane and converting that to a wider sidewalk and bike lanes and converting the north lanes into a series of one ways. This will discourage through traffic on Queens Quay, enhance the streetcar track and give Queens Quay a truly pedestrian environment along the water's edge.
 
Added lights will not make a noticeable difference as they will program them to prevent traffic from backing up too much. Also these stops will be where people will be getting off so does it really make a difference? Just seems like another stupid Star article trying to stir s**t up since it was a slow news day.
