Toronto Queens Quay & Water's Edge Revitalization | ?m | ?s | Waterfront Toronto

Now that work has started on Queens Quay I signed up for weekly construction notices. I can post them here if anyone is interested.

For next week:

Queens Quay Revitalization

Construction Notice #15
Week of September 10 to September 14, 2012

There will be minor construction activities on Queens Quay this week.

TTC will continue work in the Harbourfront Portal at Bay Street. Demolition work is scheduled to begin the week of September 10. Trucks and crews will occupy the track right-of-way and exit/entry ramp area with little to no disruption to vehicle access along Queens Quay.

Toronto Hydro will continue its pre-construction activities which include “locates” to identify gas, electrical, water and other services in and near excavation areas. Small test pit and boreholes (about 4” in diameter) will also be scheduled to prepare for dewatering.

Please see Construction Notice #15 for complete details.

The official groundbreaking for the revitalization of Queens Quay in the Central Waterfront construction of this project will take Place at Simcoe Wave Deck on Friday Nov 16 at noon to 1 pm.

Can't wait to see this completed and it will show what the eastern section will look like in the coming years if they just forget about the Union loop. Time for TTC to come up with a new plan to replace the Union loop 100% with the idea of taking the line to Bloor St by Bay St at a fraction of the current cost to rebuilt it.

Emphasis mine. Is this a typo? I have never, ever, seen - even in the most hard-core transit geek wish-map porn - a streetcar line running at least partially underground from Union to Bloor. Not to say it isn't a good idea, but I can't even imagine the cost of such an undertaking if it's underground. If it's above ground, it won't fly unless separated from traffic by curbs, moats, what have you.

It needs to be on the surface and fail to state that.

Time has come to close Bay off to traffic south of Queen as it is a zoo for pedestrians now. From Queen to Bloor, it is in its own ROW, thou it could run in mix traffic with some problems. TTC has look a number of times about bring streetcars back to Bay to deal with the over crowding on the Yonge line, but nothing has happen today. As long as Ford is in office, its a dead issue.

+100

Keep the current tunnel to clear LSB and whatever the Gardiner becomes but build a new portal roughly in front of the Air Canada Centre to bring it to the surface. Abandon the current Union loop.

A couple of web cams on the Waterfront Toronto web site for the Queen's Quay project.

One looking east from the Admiralty Point Condominiums and one looking west.

^^^ Those safety rings around the steep portion of the wavedeck look ridiculous. Either it was built too steep/dangerous or it doesn't need those. But it's either a design flaw or it isn't. And if it isn't it shouldn't need those rings.

Where can I get a good shot of what the finished street will look like. Waterfront Toronto only has this image:

Any other renderings?

I think it's not for safety but to discourage skateboarders.

It was a safety factor to stop both skateboarders and cycles from using it as well the rollerblades.
