Toronto Pearson International Airport

So time to expand quickly . How can they grow if there’s no room left. Yul is packed too . There’s a disconnect between AC and the airports it seems

My spouse had a conference in Naples last month, and so of course I went along as well. Booking AC, the way there was Toronto-Munich-Naples with a Lufthansa City connection. On the way back was Naples-YUL-YYZ. That was a very full flight.

In the mid afternoon on a Sunday, YUL was rammed with flights arriving from Europe and the US, with a 45 minute wait to get through customs and immigration. Thankfully, there was a separate CBSA line and area for Canadian connections which only had a few minutes’ delay. It’s been a long time since going through YUL, so that was a very welcome surprise.

100%. For a relatively new terminal, it seems way too overcrowded. I realize it's not brand new, but the layout or something is just bad.
That terminal is not as new as you think. It opened 21 years ago. Time to build out a new pier.

I think that's more than a rumor: it's obvious. The T1 international zone is a madhouse in the evening. Not just insufficient gates, but the gate areas themselves are far too small to accommodate multiple 300-400 passenger aircraft loading up at once.

I say rumour because we aren't really hearing anything from the GTAA in terms of terminal crowding. Over on the Air Canada flyer talk forum though, people have reported that even the odd Air Canada flight has used the IFT. Which, if I'm Air Canada the primary tenant at YYZ and paying big bucks to have them cater to me. I'd be pretty pissed if my and my alliance partners' passengers were stuck bussing out to a remote gate somewhere in a glorified school portable (Hyperbole intended lol). AC managed to twist the GTAA's arm enough to have them move Sunwing out to terminal 3 when they launched Rouge way back. So they can throw their weight around here as well.

The LIFT program aside there's little coming out of the GTAA regarding the situation, we though definitely see the issue.

I found the Infield Terminal quite nice, at least compared to the other "overflow" terminals I've seen in Europe. When I flew out of the IFT with TAP Portugal, I appreciated the space and seating compared to the crammed T1 International Departures area.

Agreed. If it was accessible by underground high-speed walkway or train then it would be pretty standard, albeit small, island terminal found at numerous airports.

That building just wasn't designed to be used for decades. It was originally purposed to provide gate space to replace that which was lost at the old T1 during construction of T1-NEW. They really need to get going on a new pier. This city isn't getting any smaller and traffic ain't dropping anytime soon. Just get on with it!

Neos to Milan pulled out but Air Serbia is starting service.

It does sound like Pearson is embarking on expansion, including claims that it will have shovels in the ground in 2025 based on their website, but it's pretty unclear what exactly that means. The work they are starting is on their "Accelerator" program which "has begun and we are planning to have shovels in the ground in 2025. It will deliver vital upgrades and revitalization of our airport assets, aiming to improve our on-time performance, reduce emissions, mitigate climate-change impacts and accommodate near-term passenger growth." Terminal expansion is in the plans, but it seems like that still on the horizon, although I think they said somewhere that Pearson LIFT is a 10 year plan.

By the way, the airport authority's website has got to be one of the worst examples of spending a lot of words to say nothing that I've ever seen.

I'd guess that's likely out of date.

There was an extensive article about Pearson's 10-year expansion program starting on page B1 of last Saturday's Star. The contract for the LIFT planning, design and construction contract was awarded in the summer. So seems unlikely there'll be digging already in 2025.Though it's certainly proceeding.

Also, they'll be issuing an RFP for Terminal 1 and 3 improvements soon.

the part that starts this year from my understanding is more along the lines of "renovations" than "expansion".

The expansion part is a few years out but still proceeding.

Like all infrastructure projects in this province, it all seems to be done under the shroud of absolute secrecy.
