I'm not really sold on the use of a unique technology. One of the strengths of using the TTC subway standard was that Greenwood could be used by both Bloor-Danforth and Relief Line trains. With a separate technology, that plan is now out the window. Also, I was secretly hoping that Phase 2 of the Relief Line would have been extending it west to Spadina, then north connecting it to the existing Spadina Subway, allowing the original University wye interlining to be used, thereby negating the need for an expansion of Bloor-Yonge. With this technology change, that is most certainly out the window.

Of course, using RER rolling stock would have accomplished pretty much the same thing, as Willowbrook could have become the yard.

We won't need similar capacities in the future, we'll need more.
Exactly! Why build a toy when for a fraction more, you can build something real. London would not build the Docklands Light Railway today as they did initially. They'd build it much closer to a full 'metro' model. Or even larger.

The "DLR" has been mentioned in a number of news reports as to what the "Ontario Line" is to emulate.

Beware!
One of many articles on this:
[...]
In some ways the DLR has been a victim of its own success. With passenger numbers exceeding expectations, many of the past and planned improvements to the DLR have focused on increasing capacity: in particular, by lengthening trains and station platforms and by improving junctions so that services can run more frequently.

But it's also intriguing to look at which new destinations the Docklands Light Railway might serve. The map below depicts the current DLR network, together with a number of extension proposals, past and present: [...]

Premier Ford Unveils Transportation Vision
Ontario Announces $28.5 Billion to Get Ontario Moving

Transit users and commuters across Ontario can look forward to transportation improvements as part of the Government of Ontario's historic new transportation vision, Premier Doug Ford announced today. Joined by Jeff Yurek, Minister of Transportation, and Monte McNaughton, Minister of Infrastructure, Ford announced a $28.5 billion expansion to Ontario's transit network. This is the most money ever invested to get shovels in the ground and get new subways built.

"Our government is investing in transportation to bring relief and new opportunities to transit users and commuters," said Ford. "We announced the new Ontario Line to deal with the dangerous congestion on Line 1, the Yonge North Subway Extension that will connect the subway to one of the region's largest employment centres, the three-stop Scarborough Subway Extension to better serve communities, and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension — a large portion of which will be built underground to keep people and goods moving on our roadways. This is our plan, our priority."

The province will invest $11.2 billion to support these four rapid transit projects. This funding over-delivers on the government's commitment to put $5 billion into subway extensions.

This funding is in addition to the significant contributions made to transportation in Ontario. In just nine months, Ontario has delivered the long asked for expansion of GO Train service to Niagara Falls and St. Catharines, years ahead of schedule; dramatically enhanced GO Train service to Kitchener-Waterloo region; committed billions to transit projects for Hamilton and Ottawa regions; moved ahead with the long-awaited light rail transit for Mississauga; and announced $1.3 billion to repair and rebuild highways across the province, as well as billions in infrastructure to better support our rural communities.

As part of the announcement today, Premier Ford reaffirmed the government's commitment to working with the City of Toronto to upload the TTC subway infrastructure.

"The TTC is a vital service that supports not just Torontonians but the people of Ontario," said Yurek. "Our government is continuing to work in good faith with the city under the Terms of Reference to make sure that we can build better transit faster."

"Today we are embarking on the most ambitious provincial transit buildout Ontario has ever seen," added McNaughton. "This is great for people and good for jobs."

Quick Facts
  • The Ontario Line will cost $10.9 billion and will be delivered by 2027
  • The Yonge North Subway Extension will cost $5.6 billion and should be open soon after the Ontario Line
  • The Scarborough Subway Extension will cost $5.5 billion and will be delivered before 2030
  • The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will cost $4.7 billion and will be delivered before 2031
  • The projects will require a combined $28.5 billion, of which the province has committed $11.2 billion
  • The Terms of Reference agreed between the province and the City of Toronto have guided discussions on uploading subway infrastructure from the city to the province, including the building and maintenance of new and existing subway lines. These discussions continue regarding existing subway lines

While I love these subjects and enjoy the comments and discussions we have here I've got to admit that I'm starting to not care what they do. The aspect that would impact me most is DRL West and no one is proposing to do anything on that file from any political party and this proposal is kind of killing its potential. Go figure DRL West would also cut through what would represent one of the densest residential catchment areas of the city.

Anyways the GTA is a suburban political entity and downtown is doing fine anyways so go to it boys

The only way to get significantly more is gonna be something like Crossrail or tunneled RER and that will be VERY expensive.
Not that much more expensive at all. Consider that RER stock will be similar in dimension and weight as UPX. Consider the guideways at Pearson. They will handle RER single decker stock. The extra costs are really electrification, not much else. Anywhere a light metro can go (and DLR is the comparator Ford is using) so can EMU stock, including tunnels. London runs mainline Class 717 trains in the Great Northern Tunnels, which are a smaller bore than touted for this.
Ford also mentioned that the ontario line would eventually be extended to pearson airport
Any link or reference for this? It might *somewhat* put some sense to his "Ontario Place Ferris Wheel Special" segment.

Yeah, I made that point earlier after incredulously glancing at the map and realizing the segment down to Ferris Wheel Central (Ontario Place) would be equidistant to Dundas West, but far....by *FAR*...the most logical. The answer from one star-struck consumer poster was "Think of the development possibility". Whaa?

So, thoughts on the 2028 opening date? Is this in any ways feasible?
Depends exactly how quickly the government wants to move on it. If the province says "All hands on deck" and starts removing design hurdles, gets contracts issued quickly to clear the way, and sets up a bidding process for the P3 immediately - *maybe*. Funding would need to start flowing tomorrow and it would have to happen real fast.

Using Greenwood was a pretty flawed plan given that contracts for the West yard still were not out and Greenwood would need major reconfiguring to handle articulated trains.

Steve Munro did a good article on the issues there and a different yard actually sidesteps alot of the problems.

But then where is this new yard going to go?
