Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

My source wasn't privy to all the various details, but was aware of one project component causing some apprehension.

In due course, I'll put more info in the public domain, or point the media in the right direction. But in protecting my sources, I think its something I can't reveal right now.

I will say, since I've put this out, I have more people whispering at me; and no one is correcting my understanding thus far.

Well since they didn't have all the details, I guess all we can hope for is that this is just an unsubstantiated rumour like the cracked concrete slab on Line 5.
On the other hand, Line 5 is so severely delayed that it doesn't really matter what the cause is anymore; it might as well be a cracked concrete slab with how long it's taking.

I'm guessing something substantiated will come out soon, but until then I will remain optimistic that this line opens early, like the Canada Line did (that's the only RT project in recent Canadian history that I know opened early).

Definitely more than that.

I'm hearing more all the time.

Hi everyone. My name is Andy Takagi, I'm the Toronto Star's transportation reporter.

I'm looking into some of the rumours that the Ontario Line will miss its expected opening date of 2031. If you or someone you know has information about the delays and would be willing to provide documents or comments, that would help tremendously with my reporting.

I would need to be able to verify your identity if we were to speak, but because this is a sensitive topic, I'm able to provide confidentiality to protect your identify if you feel revealing any information would put your job at risk. I do not publish materials or quotes anonymously without a mutual understanding of how you would be represented in the paper. I'm happy to chat further over email or through DMs about what that process would look like.

If you have any other information about Metrolinx, Toronto transit and projects that you have concerns about, I'm always open to chat. You can reach me at my email atakagi@thestar.ca or via DMs on UrbanToronto, which I check periodically. You can also find my contact info on my Star author page: https://www.thestar.com/users/profile/andy-takagi/

(Apologies in advance to the mods if this type of post isn't allowed.)

I know that even before hearing Northern Light's rumours, that the possibility of this opening on time was already non-existent. It's already behind in schedule with just the early phase work alone. The only question now is how long of a delay we should expect.

Add in some financial compensation for leads and I am sure the floodgates will open lol

@Northern Light - I will keep a lookout for the next new Lambo coming off the lot ;)

Were your contacts able to explain the alleged delay?

With much of the station excavation complete on the southern section (and the Pape North section's excavation beginning this month) and tunnelling set to begin later this year, it seems hard to understand what remains that would take more than six years from this point. Unless ML is planning to hold off from certain contract executions due to lack of funding?
Tunnelling by TBM of the Southern is scheduled to start in 2026. This one is indeed behind schedule.

Don't Andy and I both wish The Star's newsroom was so well funded!

If I was looking at the Ontario line and along is this going to be on time, the first and most obvious problem is the North tunnels from Gerrard to the Don Valley. There is a lot of focus on the machines that arrived for the south tunnels, a lot of progress on station excavation, elevated sections typically go faster, and really some aspects of this project seem ahead of time... but the info available on North tunnels is limited. What boring machines will be used, when will they arrive, the launch area is behind the south tunnels. Without tunnel boring machines launching soon this project is going to be late in my opinion.

When laying blame here it is important to consider the “Pape Tunnel and Underground Stations” contract was awarded nearly 16 months later than the “Southern Civil, Stations and Tunnel” contract. I couldn’t say why but it seems an obvious oversight.

As the Pape tunnels are ~3.3 km long (with 2 station boxes to traverse) and the downtown tunnels ~6.0km long (with 6 station boxes to traverse), it's possible to delay the start of Pape but have them complete at about the same time. Unless one of the projects hits an unforeseen major problem, of course.
