I am certainly no activist, but, all that salt is going to end up in one place...and that is not good.

OT: I think the city has been proactive with regards to salt use; environmental impact aside, all that salt does a number on infrastructure (you can often see salt-stains in underground leakages, say at subway stations).

What I find truly abhorrent is when absolutely zero care was given when salt is applied - just dumping excessive amounts on sidewalks.

OT: why doesn't the city use sand instead, like other jurisdictions? because of salt companies "lobby"?
 
...I think they would have to be forming those carefully around pools of liquid nitrogen up there. /brrr
