Yes, liability is why they apply a lot of salt, not saying they shouldn't apply any. However, since there is a ton of salt still present well after the ice and snow have melted, clearly they could reduce the amount applied a little bit. Also, the excess salt itself becomes a slipping hazard. (apologies for continuing the OT topic).Because of lawsuits. The small town council I once sat on was sued dozens of times per year for "slip and fall" accidents. Cost us hundreds of thousands every year.
