I wish I'd taken picture of the old church before it came down. There was a token effort to preserve it as a facade by some parties. It wasn't spectacular in the sense of a great presence but that's my opinion. I couldn't find any online pictures...
Ian Fleming, who created James Bond, lived in the area during WWII when he was stationed at Camp X in Whitby. Camp X is where he trained to be a spy. Rumour is this church was the inspiration for the name James Bond. For that reason alone it should have been saved.
It's a good story, but as I understand it, the idea that the church was the inspiration for the name, or that Ian Fleming was ever at Camp X, is more urban legend than reality. Too bad ...
