Brampton will suffer the fate of all suburbs without transit. More gridlock, a poorer economy. Essentially Brampton will be left behind. The idiotic politicians, continue to make irrational decisions. This is why transit needs to be de-politicized. Politicians should provide the money only. Let the planners pick the route. That's how it's done in most progressive cities. Here we just waste decades on endless debates.

Toronto is no better. It's the same problem with the Crosstown LRT. Stopping at Weston Road makes no sense. Take it to the Airport, but no, now we have Smart Track with a stupid plan to take it to the corporate centre but NOT the airport itself.

What else is new in Toronto? All of a sudden all politicians are experts in transit. Everyone is coming up with their own plan or line? Where else in the world does this madness happen? That's why we are so far behind.

The problem I have with your post is that it makes the false assumption that Brampton has no transit....of course it does....what this debate over the HMLRT exposed (IMO) is that many transit advocates only consider railed transit as "transit"...if that is the case we should really save ourselves some money and exclude the options of bus or bus rapid transit from our transit studies/reviews.

One of the arguments some Bramptonians made was that the LRT did very little for Brampton - it was essentially a regional line to help connect people from Kitchener/Georgetown to Mississauga, which is true. But lots of highways that Brampton critically depends on run through other municipalities. Maybe Mississauga should discontinue Highway 410 just north of the 401.

Not sure if you are just lashing out with a poke at Brampton or if you want to have a serious discussion about that but, interestingly, the 410 and the proposed HMLRT present a very interesting contrast that (IMO) shows why the HMLRT was of limited value in terms of "moving Bramptonians".

Stay tuned, apparently...

I've heard that city staff are preparing 3 more LRT route options to connect to Brampton GO/downtown for consideration. This should be fun to watch.....
Even if one of these routes succeeded, it will have to come from a future/different pot of funding.

Ontario has already returned the Hurontario funds back to the Moving Ontario Forward fund, as repeatedly confirmed recently, and repeatedly warned over the last few months.

Brampton will have to do all the due diligence and re-apply, all over again. Hopefully Hurontario LRT will extend through to Brampton GO one way or another, but if that happens, that will be further into the future now, from a future fund.

What routes could they possibly not have thought of by now?
The long sought after.....Hurontario to Steeles....East on Steeles to Rutherford...north on rutherford to Clarence...west on Clarence to Main....south on Main to Harold...west on Harold to Mclaughlin then north to the railine and north-east to Brampton GO.....

...satisfies everyone! ;)

But it still doesn't go to Wild Water kingdom, Chinguacousy Park, Trinity Common, or Brampton Civic Hospital. No one is satisfied!

Wow. Just wow.

“We had one of the most debated, most studied and most publicized issues in our city’s history,” Dhillon said. “Staff already made their recommendations and yet (councillors) want staff to come up with three alternative routes? This is all for show.

Dhillon said transit planners have made clear that it would take five to six years to complete any further studies, assuming the government is even willing to continue discussions.

A 5- or 6-year long sideshow. Anything can happen in that timeframe, especially given that elections at all 3 levels of government will occur.
