My girlfriend and i just took a trip up to Toronto for are vacation and got screwed over by dundas Square hotel, on there website they claim to be "Clean" and "newly renovated", which is far from the truth! We registered and paid upfront as they requested for 2 nights and headed up to our room to find a closet with a bed in it, very small and dirty, there was specs of what appears to be blood on three locations, across from the bed, above the sink in the bathroom, and next to the toilet , one of our pillows didn't even have a proper pillow case on it, the mattress was plastic and was ripped up, hair in the linen, patches of paint on the walls, dirty drawers, tiny box for a window, and exposed pipes on the ceiling! funny they didn't show pictures of this on there website.
We went down and asked to get our money back and the guy said we would get refunded for the next day before 11 am, but not this night, so we asked for some clean linen and put the sheets over top everything .
The next day we went down to the main desk and there was a new guy there so we explained everything to him , he said that we cant get our money back , blamed us for sleeping in the room, and blamed us for not changing to another room, we said that the guy on the other night didn't give us that option, we argued for sometime, so we took out the cell phone and started making calls, that made him finally call his manager,
we had payed 75 dollars for one night plus tax, plus we had to put down a $20 deposit , so thats $105 , but the guy only gave us back $70 and the guy refused to give us back our $20 room key deposit!
Tired and frustrated we left, but later on we discovered that rooms are actually suppose to be $55 dollars a night, including tax so they charged us $75 a night plus additional taxes!
i went back there and confronted him about it and he told me that he knows nothing about that and we should come back later in the day and talk to the manager in person, i said to him that the prices of the rooms should be basic information that all staff should know, he continued to brush me off claiming he was really busy, i left.

the next night we stayed at 1 king west, wow what a different world, very nice hotel! we had a great time in Toronto, went to the jazz festival, youth day fest, south asian fest at cne, went korea town, anex, st clair west, waterfront, ect. and took lots of pictures that i'll post in the near future.

Should've spent a bit more for the better hotel. Dundas Square hotel is more for backpackers just looking for a place to nap, hence the low pricing and bad conditions. Its more of a hostel than anything.

that sucks. the best bet is to read up on reviews of the hotel you are planning to book from sites like tripadvisor. that's the first place i go to when i'm looking for a hotel. also it's usually better to stay in bigger chain hotels as they have some sort of customer service you can get in touch with and complain.

glad to hear that you had a great time here even with that minor snag in the beginning.

Man, that's horrible. My daughter was in London and booked a 'hostel/hotel' room - she and her friends wound up sleeping in the open that night - it was preferable to sleeping in the room they paid for.

There are still stories of this sort coming out of New York City.

I would stick to the known chains and also avoid anything with the word 'hostel'.

Let me get this straight:

You were upset with the quality of the hostel you chose to stay at, so you got a room in a luxury hotel instead.

Something does not compute.

Anyway, www.tripadvisor.com. Learn it, love it, use it.

Speed Stick is hardly "a luxury hotel", grey.

Best night's sleep I ever got was on the floor of the Gare du Nord station - despite the annoying office workers stepping over us in the morning.

I'd say 1KW is more of a regular 4 star at best...but it's certainly a luxury hotel compared to the other one.

At least you didn't book the Bay Street Motel - the lowest rated hotel in Toronto and spitting distance to the bus terminal - perhaps the squalor of last years of the Ford Hotel concentrated into one roach pile?

Interestingly, the Marriott Residence Inn in the Entertainment District is #1.

Yikes. I remember walking by this place once and noticing how frightening it looked -- I recall there were wires coming out of windows and going into other windows (phone? cable? electricity?) and some guy was washing the interior of the entrance area... by blasting it with a hose. I looked it up later online out of curiosity and saw streams of negative feedback and horror stories on various travel sites, as linked above.

I agree it's disgraceful that they're allowed to stay open. But I think this is just one bad apple... I've been burned on bad hostels and hotels in other countries, too. For once we can say "Toronto is just like Italy!"

Bottom line, always try to get a personal recommendation before staying somewhere, read online reviews for strong consensus (there will always be a handful of complaints) and when in doubt, go with a chain you've heard of. Also, sometimes you really do get what you pay for.

Bay Street hotel - I get a chuckle and a wave of disgust at the same time everytime I walk by this place. What an eyesore.

Here's the reviews:
