I believe that was a toll road. Of course, toll roads turn the biggest advocates of cars (the CAA, Rob Ford Types) into their biggest opponents.I'm always surprised at the light speed reversal in policy. Something which is beneficial, but free, is great. Something that is equally beneficial, but costs 4-7$ per use, is abhorrent and to be avoided at all costs. Can you even bury a 10 lane expressway? The costs of burying road tunnels after two lanes in either direction tend to go ballistic.
Not sure how many lanes it is, but didn't they just build a highway on the ocean floor between Scandinavia and Denmark? They could build the highway in pre-fab sections and 'sink' them along the harbour, then pump them out. If Taipee can do build a massive tunnel for its highway and flood control, why can't we?
The proposal I am referring to was going to cost the city nothing; the developer wanted the land rights under the Gardiner in return. Sounds like win-win for the city to me. The city gets a new highway, gets ride of the Gardiner and could probably haggle some new parkland in the process.
I would be against a toll road in lieu of the Gardiner for the very reason that there are NO alternate routes. There is the Gardiner/Lakeshore and NOTHING else until the 401.
