Markham GTA Centre | ?m | ?s | GTA S. and E. | BBB

This arena isn't being built as a low-cost alternative to the ACC (as someone suggested earlier in the thread); it's being built near the highest levels of disposable income.

I would have thought (and that map sorta confirms) that would be somewhere near where southwest Mississauga and Oakville collide!

Yeah, it's a bit of a toss up, but Mississauga's numbers are pretty low and Oakville is pretty small. Someone would have to crunch the numbers!

Either way, the 407 corridor has pretty high incomes as a whole.

I think ppl like taal and Markham vip are looking at the future like it's a foregone conclusion that businesses will continue to want big parking lots in the suburbs. Companies went out there because the taxes were and are cheaper. But as mississauga has just found out, that taxing is unsustainable and taxes are going up. And what about driving. We know gas is only going up but add in an additional possibility of tolls and eventually there will be alot of people wanting to take transit to their work. As a result the traditional office parks are going to suffer. Maybe I am too much into thinking that the young ppl are more or less abandoning their cars and moving downtown so the businesses will follow. Btw we can see some of that today. But on the other hand taal and Markham vip present a future 905 oasis and a depleted 416. All the 416 has to do is change their tax rates based on here a far the company is located from the core to compete. Really that's not as difficult as some people are making it sound to be competitive again.

There may be, either, some doubt as to its status as the geographic centre or it may just be poetic license being exercised.

I was curious so I actually calculated it. It's in central Richmond Hill near the Markham border.

However, for a region that is centred a lake, the geographic centre is of limited usefulness isn't likely to be where the centre of population is. I'd guess that the centre of population is probably in North York or Etobicoke somewhere.

Aside from the obvious question (why?) there is the question of "how" you calculate that.

Why? Because it's kind of interesting and it only took a few minutes to figure out. How? It's pretty easy when using a GIS to calculate the centroid of a polygon.

Of course, that's how I would calculate it too!.....LOL

I think everyone is too concerned about my statement that Markham is the geographic centre of the GTA.
Just look at a map of the GTA people....it doesn't take a genious to see that the centre is either Vaughan, Richmond Hill, or Markham.
Is Yonge and Steeles the centre?....well last I checked Markham borders Yonge and Steeles.
Is it the Richmond Hill border with Markham as the mathematician above suggests?....maybe, but markham is still there in the picture.

I can't speak for everyone but it was your constant repeating of it that got me wondering....then in mid April you said you kinda didn't mean it any more than loosely (in the other thread) and then, all of a sudden, started throwing it out again (in this thread).....if it is not important and you don't want people to be too concerned with it....just stop saying it over and over again as if it is fact....huh?

As I have said before, I admire your enthusiasm.....but this kinda comment loses me. On one hand you come across as a bit insulting to people who don't/can't see Markham as the geographic centre with the "it doesn't take a genious" language....and then by the end of your statement you kinda say "well, Markham borders the geographic centre".....maybe the truth is that it does not take a genius to see that it is not the GC.....and then it probably does not take a genius to figure out it does not matter anyway and we should just stop constantly repeating the non-"fact" that it is and get back to discussing the rink....or the casino or what ever superlative-nifty-keeno-super project is next for #markhamthenewcentreoftheknownuniverse ;)

Good to see that UT has managed to replace Future Mayor!

I remember him ! Very passionate.

At one point I recall him stating phase 2 of Mars would be moving to MCC ? He was very adamant about it as well. :)

Kids today! I remember a day when GIS meant something else and when your GIS was wonky you just took some pepto bismol ;)

Curiosity got the best of me...

Using the 2006 Census numbers, the geographic mean centre of population in the GTA is located at Wilson Ave and Allan Road (Wilson Subway station). Who knew?

There you go. Maybe a stadium is a better use of that big box land under the Downsview Airport runway approach?

I am not the one who made that term up: "geographic centre of the GTA".
I have seen other sources use that term many many times over the years when describing Markham.
I have also heard it used to decribe Vaughan as well.

“Markham is the perfect location for this facility for several reasons, including proximity to major transit, a diverse and growing population, and a location in the approximate centre of the GTA.” (Graeme Roustan)

Well that explains it....it is not like he had a reason to "bum up" Markham.....oops he had 162.5 million reasons ;)

LOL....true
However, my point is that "Centre of the GTA" is just a general term used to describe the location of Markham relative to the other municipalities in the GTA.
Is it 100% accurate...maybe not. But does it give u a general idea of where markham is in the GTA...YES!

I didn't mean to be offensive with my previous "it doesn't take a genious" remark. However, I really do think it is quite obvious though when u look at a map of the GTA that markham is approximately the centre.
