Another rumour is that RIOCAN/Allied are interested in building a pedestrian walk to the south of Front Street from Spadina to Portland to compliment their new development on the north. That makes sense too if they are going to pry some money from the wallets of the Cityplace folks, just a better pedestrian experience.

Adam Vaughan mentioned this last year back when the Globe was seeking approval for their own project. They had wanted to build a sidewalk and even went as far as suggesting a square built over the rail yard on the West side of Spadina. Would be amazing if they could create a second pedestrian connection to CityPlace, whether it be another bridge from Telegram Mews to Front, or a new park/square over Bathurst Yard.

Rumours are that the Globe will remain as tenants and not leave the site.
No confirmation on what will happen to the current design but a year long delay on construction would not surprise me as they go through new approvals again.

Is it worth moving twice in a short amount of time?

Between Front and the railway? Would need to realign that stretch of Front a bit north to be able to create anything that would actually increased the pedestrian experience. As it sits now you could probably only squeeze a medium-sized sidewalk that I imagine wouldn't be too pleasant to walk down.

My hunch is that the podium is going to be redesigned to allow a Globe and Mail office but mixed with much higher retail prominence and integration with the lands to the west (think northeast corner of Yonge/Dundas a la AMC, Future Shop etc).

Very cool. That would only help to increase property values in the surrounding area.

Sounds like to me they wanted to cantilever it a bit over the rail lands. All speculation at this stage, just something we have heard that they want more than a sidewalk, thus I used the term "pedestrian walk" to make it sound bigger!

There is enough land to the south where the old incline was for track coming from the yard below to the yards on the north side of Front east of Spadina. This would require building a new retaining wall to the south.

The other option (2) is to place caisson next to the current retaining wall with a cantilever support system for the walkway.

The city has eye option 1 for a long time.

What every option is use, it will make that street more friendly to walk on.

Maybe that missing stair case on the east side of the bridge can be built with this new walk area.

GO transit has their finger in this plan, as they want a new station for the current yard and that is tie into the DRL EA which hasn't got off the ground yet. It years off at this time.

Crane back on site this morning unloading huge girders off a truck. The kind they drive into the ground to shore up the parimeter foundation. Wonder if things are back on?

Gee, "you got to be kidding us"...i guess its ok for some? but not others..

Downtown 'mega-casino' a bad idea, real-estate firms warn
The battle over where to place a Toronto casino is intensifying with a group of developers arguing a gambling complex in the city’s core will jeopardize “the success of our downtown.”

“In our view, the risk of the potential negative impacts from developing a mega casino in the Downtown outweighs the potential benefits,” states the letter from RioCan, Allied Properties and Diamond Corp. The three firms are partners in a joint venture to develop a site at Front Street and Spadina Avenue where The Globe and Mail is now located.

It’s a bad idea because of traffic, because of infrastructure, because of all kinds of reasons,” Mr. Sonshine said. “Certainly we have no problem if the city decides to put a casino somewhere else. We just think it would be a disaster there on Front Street – We are not taking a position on a casino. We are taking a position on a casino in the core.”

Deal Near For Globe Building

The Allied-RioCan-Diamondcorp JV that bought the 6.5-acre Globe and Mail lands for $136M in November now has the neighbouring Spadina-Front corner under contract.

RioCan CEO Ed Sonshine has confirmed the group "fully expects" to add the 1.2 acres to the assembly, in a deal conditional on the JV building a new home for the Globe. The price is secret until the deal closes, likely Feb. 18. "We're not going to build the same building," Ed said, referring to a 19-storey tower that Globe parent Woodbridge abruptly stopped work on in November; instead, it'll be a multi-use plan for the entire block. JV principals, who this week spoke out against OLG's downtown casino plans, are Europe-bound, seeking ideas for transforming the site into "a vibrant, truly urban, old-style destination."

I suspect the bigger concern is the mega shopping mall proposed by Riocan co-existing with the mega shopping mall Oxford proposes to accompany the casino.
