2 firefighters seriously hurt after falling from roof in downtown blaze

Posted: Nov 02, 2019 6:37 AM ET

Two Toronto firefighters were seriously injured after they fell from a roof while they were battling a blaze in a vacant downtown building early Saturday.

The fire occurred on Shuter Street near Jarvis Street. Fire crews were called to the scene shortly before 2 a.m.

Photos from an hour ago. It appears 85 Shuter Street took the most damage (and probably where the fire started), with 81 Shuter also damaged. 79 Shuter, on the corner of Mutual and the most attractive of the buildings, looks okay.

Fires in abandoned buildings happening too often: mayor

Toronto Mayor John Tory went to the scene on Saturday morning to show his support for the city's firefighters.

"They do such a fantastic job for us," Tory said. "We're saying a prayer for them. We are all thinking about their captain."

Tory said fires in abandoned buildings, including properties slated to be incorporated into new developments, are happening too often in Toronto. He said the building had been boarded up.

"We have to do a better job of working with the owners. The owners in this case clearly tried. We have to make it harder for people to get inside those buildings because that's where some of these fires are coming from," he said.

"We have to take a look at some other steps we can take to keep people out of these buildings when they are closed up like this so that these kind of things are minimized, hopefully to zero."

Ontario's Office of the Fire Marshal is working with Toronto Fire investigators to determine the cause of the blaze. Toronto police are also involved in the investigation.

Jessop said about the cause: "It's too early to speculate. but I can tell you it's a full court press on this investigation. It will take certainly a number of days for us to determine the cause."
