Toronto Forma | 308m | 84s | Great Gulf | Gehry Partners

I suspect their strategy is to build this tower to rave reviews that there will be enough interests generated market wise to build the second one. And the rate this is going, they may very well pull that off.

I fear, outside of some initial “wow the facade is so unique”, a lot of the press will be around how these investor units that were sold during the high times are unliveable in reality.

Perhaps Great Gulf will pivot strategies for the West tower and market it accordingly, but the public perception of Forma may already be tainted by then.

Just a prediction, I personally would love for it to be built, perhaps with larger units!

Fitting that Toronto, as the city of his birth, will be home to one of his last works (if not the absolute last?)

RIP.
This project has been in construction for 3ish years, im sure there are many other projects in design and construction phase at gehry partners. So not his last by 10+ projects to hazard a guess, but will always be his tallest.

Zaha Hadid's firm continue to churn out projects bearing her signature curves long after her passing. I don't know if she actually had a hand in designing them or they're designed by her team, many of whom undoubtedly trained under her. I wonder if this will be the case with Gehry.

That's unfortunately on GG and not on the market (or The City) here. And they should have least thought of that VE'ing units like that will likely have negative consequences in their publicity of offerings of good faith. /sigh

Purists will say that Forma isn't a Gehry or is a Gehry with an asterisk. He designed it but wasn't here to see it built, fine tune it and see it through. But is La Sagrada Família a Gaudi? I think so*.

Did Gehry have any say over the interior of 8 Spruce ? Supposing he did, I guess he knew better than to dictate to Great Gulf that Forma could only have X number of units per floor - the Toronto market wouldn't support it.

Well... darn. We kind of all knew he might not see these built. I had my hopes up that he would.

This project started over a decade ago but was held up by red tape in a town afraid of dreaming big. So yeah, I like to believe that this is what Frank is thinking of Toronto's bureaucracy wherever he is right now:

RIP Frank.
Ah yes, City Staff are literal demons to be blamed for everything. Glad to know that I, as a civil servant in an unrelated part of the City, with no connection to City Planning (who are not even to blame for the delays here, it was the developer!), am apparently personally responsible for Frank Gehry not seeing this building built. Thank you for reminding me how terrible I am (and apparently deserve Frank Gehry's dying middle finger) because I chose to try and make this City better for a career.
