One thing to remember, even though it's in the news, the Dec 7 date is from an internal document or rumour, it's still not an official announcement. (I wish it were.)

I dont see why people are saying it is risky to open in winter. December is usually light on snow these days. And they will not open a transit line that derails with a dusting of snow.

I am one of the people who previously said it would be risky to open in the winter.

Snow is not what concerns me - it's ice storms. The PR snafu that could arise as a result of the line being closed due to icing would be astronomical. (Let the fact that the open cut sections of the subway also have to contend with ice not be any kind of a factor here.)

I can just see the opening line of a front page story that will run once Crosstown finally opens some unknown number of years in the future:

If an ice storm were severe enough to shut down Line 5, it would also likely shut down some of 501 through 510, not to mention Lines 1, 2, and 4…. And GO and bus service. I don’t see the specific vulnerability for this line over other parts of the system.
I was amused to find that I have tickets to an event on Dec 20 at a venue just off Eglinton, in an area where street parking is scarce. And the happy thought ran through my mind that Line 5 might, potentially be open by then…. Whether it happens or not, it was nice for this to be within the realm of possibility and not just a hypothetical.
Wait and see is all we can do.
