Toronto Daniels Waterfront - City of the Arts | 156.05m | 45s | Daniels | RAW Design

I certainly wouldn’t give Daniels a failing city-building grade either. But they do need to be pushed on their retail tenant procuments.

Compare Brad Lamb in the east end to Daniels on this point. Or to the Canary block or distillery. Lots of better precedents.

Schmancy gentrified retail obviously doesn’t make an arts scene. But RBC, Wendy’s, Subway, Shoppers, Yogen Frutz, Scotiabank, Tim Hortons, Starbucks (Daniels’ east end tenants)... looks like a race to the bottom.

Though "curated" retail can also smacks of artifice - if not being downright exclusionary.

I don’t disagree - it’s one of the major challenges of tabla rasa type developments noted in the G&M piece and certainly a valid discussion to have about the distillery district, for example. But Daniels’ comically generic retail offerings don’t even try to engage in any kind of dialogue about community and place-making.

Hmmm. Can we blame the weather, the photographer or the subject for the dull shot? Maybe I will stick to night shots or sunny days until the Loblaw build. Smaller floor print on west tower on twelve.

I'm holding my breath on this one . Indications are this will be another bland slab( slabs ), most unfortunately in a very visible waterfront spot.

Crazy amount of piling on here, which I'll attribute to November blues. Daniels has contributed to the city in many ways. The south facing building and the arts space is excellent. The tower is hard to judge, but is at least average. And, as someone said, not all retail can be curated. Maybe they identified a shortage of low-cost fast food in the area? That's fine.
