Toronto BMO Field Renovations | ?m | ?s | MLSE | Gensler

I keep seeing grey seats in the renderings. I asked this before but do not believe I got an answer, are they replacing all the seats?

And most of the upgrades are temporary? Such civic pride & cheapness keeps shining thru. Toronto’s fave word… TEMPORARY.

There will be 6 world cup games in Toronto. The city is spending north of $100M to get ready for this. Already way too much. There will be complaints about the stadium but the focus will be the games once they get going.

I want to see these matches... Any matches. But I will not pay that kind of money for a ticket
These prices are for the opener. Later group matches should be cheaper.

Coincidentally these prices align with what Jays tickets are going for this weekend. Simply the reality of big events.

MLS has announced a change that will see their league calendar shifted in phase with the European calendar by 2027-2028. Surely this has big implications for Toronto considering the climate and lack of protection from the elements at BMO.

I’m a fan of the open grandstand appearance of BMO (considering the beautiful surroundings), but to attract fans throughout the winter I think, at a minimum, we would need some enclosure to reduce the wind.

Further details from MLS official announcement:
  • The 2027-28 MLS regular season will kick off in mid-to-late July 2027 and conclude with the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and MLS
Cup presented by Audi in late May 2028.
  • MLS will observe a midwinter break from mid-December through early February, with no league matches scheduled in January.
  • Before the change to the new calendar, MLS will stage a transition season from February to May 2027, featuring a 14-game regular season, playoffs, and MLS Cup. The results will determine 2027 qualification for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Canadian Championship, Leagues Cup, and Concacaf Champions Cup.

Strange. And Toronto is not the only MLS city to experience harsh winters, and not just Canadian cities.

There won't be much changing for TFC, frankly, aside from their June/July matches being more compressed in the spring and fall. They simply will play on the road for most of February/October/November like they do now anyway. They won't be playing "winter" matches in Toronto.

The more interesting change is that this now opens up BMO to more scheduling in the now-vacated summer. AFC Toronto have already announced a plan for a handful of matches at BMO beginning in 2027, and MLSE has stated intention of wanting to have the Canadian Shield CMNT event be an annual tournament. It's like MLSE already knew something was going to change earlier this spring.. 🤫

I know that this has been talked about in the past as a potential problem for CF Montreal but it absolutely has implications for Toronto FC too. At least in the case of Montreal, the Stade Olympique renovations are planned to include significant seating bowl reconfigurations and more modern amenities with soccer/football specifically in mind, so they might have a solution to this problem on the table.

IMO I think with this change, it might be time to start planning for something a little more enclosed in Toronto. BMO Field has a lot of character, but its open design is going to be a big vulnerability with this change. A larger version of Allianz Field in Minneapolis seems like it would strike that perfect balance on cost and providing more of a complete enclosure on the sides without going all the way for something fully enclosed like BC Place or Stade Olympique. Other northern teams like Chicago Fire and the Columbus Crew either have or are planning open-roof enclosed stadiums as well.

I heard John Tory on radio say he was at the Canada/Ecuador game last night and he noted that the northern gates now being shut off had huge line-ups to enter the stadium at the other gates. I knew enough to go to Gate 3B at the middle of the south side which had the smallest line-up, and finally got to my seat just before 7:30 pm, but the start of the game was then delayed for a few minutes anyway, I assume because much of the crowd was still outside.

There has been MLS Cup games (2016 and 2017) at BMO Field in December, and CONCACAF Champions league games in late February, but they probably would want to avoid them as much as possible.
TFC used Rogers Centre three times in 2012-13, no longer possible with field level seating in permanent baseball configuration.
There was a Canada/USA World Cup qualifying match in Hamilton on a Sunday afternoon in January 2022, I think because it wasn't practical to get the grass at BMO Field ready.
