Toronto Bloor Street Revitalization | ?m | ?s | Bloor-Yorkville BIA | architectsAlliance

I'm amazed these imbeciles have the intelligence to tie their shoes on in the morning, much less run a business.

"Shocked" to see work commence? Where have they been these past five years? And as always, the showboating, parasitic, champaigne-socialist Ruby at the fore. He's probably pissed it takes him longer to get to his office on Prince Arthur in that giant black BMW he drives, more than anything else.

I hope the court tells them to, in so many words, shove it. The *only* good thing to come out of this is that, even if the court demands an EA be done, the length of it will only be six months (or is that only for transit?).

I don't see why these retailers are complaining.. Business will be much better once Bloor becomes a destination avenue... I'd expect them, out of all people, to be the most supportive of this revitalization.

Just call William Ashley China Ltd and complain

Their phone # is 416 964-2900
I guess if enough people call, they might get idea on how stupid is what they are doing.

This folks are ignorat, arogant and out of their minds.

Just a few lines from this site:

Why should the city delay the Project?

The BST Project will make Bloor Street a no-stopping zone. Ironically, this recommendation of the Business Improvement Area will not be good for business. It will not be conducive to or feasible for a retail environment.
Construction is planned to take place during the day, rather than in the evening, making it very difficult for customers to shop. This is unlike other construction projects, such as in the Financial District, where construction takes place in the evening when businesses are closed.
Construction will run through the Christmas season, the most important time of the year for retailers.
Customer access to our stores will be severely restricted as a result of moving the sidewalks to the centre of the street and requiring pedestrians to cross the construction on footbridges.
Retailers are paying for the project for 20 years through a special surtax to cover the cost. We deserve to be involved throughout the process.
Retailers have the greatest expertise in what it takes to make Bloor Street a success. We have useful input that will make the project better.

It's sounds like a replay of the old refrain that the TTC is digging up my street and I'm unhappy so I'll pretend that I didn't see the notices from months ago.

Another excerpt from the site...

"A canvass of Bloor Street retailers found that most only learned of the Bloor Street Transformation Project within the last couple of weeks, after it was approved by City Council."

They JUST learned of this project now? Had none of these retailers read a newspaper or the BIA newsletter in the past year?

Dichotomy - I hope that was sarcasm...

There has to be something more going on here than revealed in the press release....as others have said, it is the retail businesses that have the most to gain....so why the grandstanding?

Very strange, indeed...sometimes there is this, what I would call, almost willfull stupidity that goes on in the city...just amazing....

I doubt it. Then again, if he has extra cash to give to Clayton Ruby, it's his call!

re: Bloor - my guess is there is are some merchants who have never been happy about this project from the get go trying to spoil the party now that things really started running. I also wouldn't be surprised if this project is being driven by "big" businesses (e.g. Holts, etc) and geared towards their needs.

From the Star article:
A coalition of Toronto businesses is taking the city to court over the $25-million transformation of the Bloor and Yonge area, arguing the project is seriously impacting operations and should be delayed.
Two local BIAs, the Bloor-Yorkville Business Improvement Area and Bloor Street Business Improvement Area, supported the plan and are using a levy to repay the city's $20 million loan for the project.

So, if I get this right. A coalition of local business is challenging the local BIAs, claiming they are unaware of the impacts on businesses and out of touch with their needs. The justification being a lack of consultation on the project after 3 years of consultation, and over a decade on drawing boards. The goal is to "delay" construction so as to prevent the negative aspects of construction from being felt.

It's times like this, I can't help but wish we lived in a dictatorship.

Be careful what you wish for. You mean you want to live in a dictatorship that thinks like YOU do.

Again, I fail to see how they couldn't be aware of this project until only a few weeks ago.. .This has been on the drawing boards since the late 90s, has been ready to take off for the last 3 years and the BIA's newsletter (which is sent to every member of the BIA) makes strong notes on its progress in each issue.

I don't think the rest of Toronto should be penalized for a few retailers that haven't read their mail...

Well, it's a figure of speech. All i can say is that when business start complaining they never heard of a project 10 years in the making which they are (indirectly) borrowing money to finance, and they use their own ignorance as an excuse to hamstring everyone from the local BIA to City Hall I think a little bit of authoritarianism is called for to tell them to shut the hell up and read their mail.
