RioCan to redevelop lands near Kensington Market
But developer promises not to rent space to Walmart

With Walmart out of the picture, plans by big box developer RioCan to redevelop land near Kensington Market sailed through the Toronto and East York Community Council Tuesday afternoon.

The community council unanimously approved a new application by RioCan, an approval that was aided by a pledge by RioCan not to rent space to Walmart on the new site, and a new development proposal that would make doing so next to impossible in any event.

Originally, RioCan had proposed a single-tenant retail space of 8,800-square-metres at 410-466 Bathurst St., which would have placed a downtown Walmart just to the west of Kensington Market. But the proposal raised an outcry in the form of a 91,000-name-strong petition demanding that not take place.

The new proposal includes retail, but half the building will be comprised of office space.

Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton said issues remain regarding the development, but the compromise is worth making.

Sobey's is taking the entire second floor. On the ground level are Scotiabank, a dentist, and Basil Box. Four retail spaces remain available.

anyone know what is going on with the site to the south of this? They demoed a building there and seem to be using it for staging for this development.. but the parcel is clearly not part of the development, and will presumably become a lot when the project is done.. Any idea if Riocan purchased it or something?

Also, this one is essentially done excavation, and a crane should be arriving very soon.

I found this in a newsletter published in June 2016 by the nearby Saint Volodymyr Cathedral:

"А Special General Meeting of the members of St. Volodymyr Cathedral will be held at 400 Bathurst Street, Toronto on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. for the purpose of discussing the decision by the Church Council to demolish the existing building at 406 Bathurst Street in Toronto, and how the demolition of the building relates to the financial situation of our Parish."

I've been wondering about how this one has been coming along. Not a quick build, I suppose to a great degree because of the size of the floor plate!
