On a more interesting note www.agakhanmuseum.org has posted that the Museum will be open (to the public) from September 18. Exciting news for the rest of us, non-institutional folk.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing this exciting news.

For the benefits of the non-clickers, here are some highlights:

The board of directors reinforces the international prominence of this institution. It includes (I've highlighted some elements of the CV's):
  • His Highness the Aga Khan (Chair), Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), is the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Ismaili Muslims.
  • Prince Amyn Aga Khan (Vice-Chair), is Chairman of the Executive Committee (and Member of the Board) of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, which initiates and supports economic development activities in Africa and Asia.
  • Malik Talib (Secretary), a Canadian entrepreneur and tax lawyer, is CEO of the Talmont group of companies and the current President of the Ismaili Council for Canada.
  • Peter George, a Canadian economist, served three five-year terms as President and Vice-Chancellor of McMaster University.
  • Vartan Gregorian, President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, has served as President of Brown University and as President of the New York Public Library.
  • Huguette Labelle, Chair of the Board of Transparency International, has previously served as President of the Canadian International Development Agency and Chancellor of the University of Ottawa.
  • Amin Lalji, is CEO of the Larco Group of Companies, as well as Chairman of the Aga Khan Foundation Canada National Committee.
  • Shabin Mohamed is a Trustee of the Board of the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and a member of the Board of the Toronto International Film Festival and the Advisory Board to Ryerson Image Centre.
  • Luis Monreal, the General Manager of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), was previously the Secretary-General of the International Council of Museums at UNESCO and Director of the Getty Conservation Institute.
  • Hilary M. Weston served as the 26th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1997 to 2002. She has also served as Chair of the Renaissance ROM Campaign, Trustee of the AGO and Director of Selfridges Luxury Group International.
  • James Wolfensohn, the ninth President of The World Bank Group, has also served as Chairman of the Boards of both The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Carnegie Hall.

Extremely pleased and impressed to see Gregorian, Labelle and Wolfensohn on that list.

Details are available at the web-site under the "visit" tab.

I would also encourage clicking on the "view Calendar" under the same tab, as there are many shows, performances, tours, educational programs and visiting exhibitions - many with separate tickets.

Lots of articles and coverage surrounding opening of the Aga Khan Museum. Surprisingly low key about the same day opening of the Ismaili Centre, which will become by far the largest Muslim place of worship in Canada.

Anyway, here is a sampling:

With a building designed by Fumihiko Maki and artifacts from the Aga Khan's own collection, it will be one of the best museums of Islamic culture in the world.

And two more articles, this time from The Art Newspaper:

Aga Khan’s gift to Canada:
Riches of Islamic art and science unveiled in Toronto’s new cultural complex

Bringer of hope and fine architecture:
In a rare interview, His Highness the Aga Khan describes his global approach to helping Islamic communities help themselves, while also restoring their past heritage

This complex reminds me of the Institut du Monde Arabe building (very creative and beautiful design) in terms of purpose/mandate.

Pictures from a tour I had last Sunday. This place is quite stunning. The attention to detail is noticeable everywhere. The geometric shapes on floors and walls, their reflection on other parts of the building/walls depending on time of day was so impressive. I could have stayed there all day! The prayer hall is breathtaking!

Can't wait to see the report! And thank you to canadan for the interior and exterior views - love the geometric motif used throughout.

I was scanning media a pinch and there have been literally hundreds of articles about the Ismaili Centre and Aga Khan Museum on very reputable outlets around the world. It seems many of them actually flew reporters across the pond just to develop original articles and conduct interviews. While we've had other great buildings open here in the past, I can't recall anything generating this sort of international attention (though, I don't know what happened with the CN tower in the 70's). Seems the Aga Khan's words ring true - a few months ago he stated that Toronto was going to soon be showing up on the radar of world cities (to great applause).

Anyway - I thought this very recent article from the Architectural Record is noteworthy for the architects and enthusiasts that frequent this group:
http://archrecord.construction.com/news/2014/09/140919-Makis-Aga-Khan-Museum-Makes-Its-Debut.asp
"Toronto’s cultural brand has moved into a new galaxy."

Here is also the report from Urban Toronto:
http://urbantoronto.ca/news/2014/09/aga-khan-museum-opens-public-don-mills
"An oasis of calm and contemplative design, both in the serene yet bold and hard-edged geometry of the buildings, and in the softness of the surrounding landscape, the Aga Khan Museum and the adjoining Ismaili Centre make a momentous addition to Toronto's cultural mosaic, unmatched in many years."
