Toronto police planning a new $39M home for Scarborough's 41 Division

Current headquarters once housed Scarborough municipal offices

Toronto police have a $38.9-million budget to replace the 51,000-square-foot structure, once home to provincial and municipal courts and to Scarborough’s municipal offices, with a new building at 2222 Eglinton Ave. E.

It’s a project Toronto Police Services Board decided on in 1996 after studying the condition of its buildings, Thomas Levesque, senior project manager for Toronto Police Service, said this week.

Construction of a new building was to begin in 2014, but it didn’t. Work is scheduled to start, however, in January 2021 and to finish by September 2023.

The existing structure at the corner of Birchmount Road served as Scarborough’s municipal building, which included the mayor’s office, before the Scarborough Civic Centre opened in 1973.

It has been used exclusively by the police since 1978.

The building has gone through a number of renovations and hasn’t aged well.

Toronto police to reveal look of Scarborough's new 41 Division headquarters​

Scarborough residents are invited on Wednesday, May 26, to see what a new headquarters for Toronto Police 41 Division could look like.

People can also have their questions answered about the new building at 2222 Eglinton Ave. E., now halfway through its design phase, at a virtual town hall from 7 to 9 p.m.

Toronto’s police board decided in 1996 it wanted to replace the aging structure, which once housed courts and Scarborough’s municipal offices.

Thomas Levesque, senior project manager, said participants will be shown renderings of some rooms and the exterior.

The project’s budget was set at $38.9 million, and operations in the old building will continue as the new one is built.

Construction may be able to start in August or September, depending how on how site plan approvals go, Levesque said.

New renderings are updated in the database! There is some minor information updated in the project. The overall parking spaces were reduced from 223 parking spaces to 216 parking spaces. The total building story count remains the same at 2 storeys. Finally, the overall height slightly increased from 10.85m to 12.30m.
