I mean that's basically what they are doing. There are only a handful of parking ramps for the entire development, and internal grid car traffic will be pretty limited.

I concur.

Morever, the City doesn't want parkland as strata, which would preclude putting any garage under park space as well.

Better to just reduce reliance on car infrastructure to begin with; this development is well placed to do so given the coming GO station, streetcar improvements and improving local amenities.
Parking here is provided at a rate of 0.4 spaces per unit (plus 0.10 spaces per unit for visitor), or 2,999 spaces for 7,504 units. It's not particularly high, and is lower than what has been provided in most buildings in Humber Bay, which have mostly provided the old by-law rates. I think it's fairly appropriate given the location, which even with the GO staiton, won't exactly be a transit haven, and given its excellent highway access.

I think the plan is for all the underground parking to be connected and service loading docks to be underground as well. In theory, the internal streets could be made car-free or car-low. Would still require access for emergency vehicles. I see no reason though why the streetcar loop couldn't just be an Amsterdam style transit mall.

In advance of the first permanent new structures on this site, a big-top is going to be landing here for a few months this spring:

We've been told that Cirque du Soleil's return to Toronto will be on this site, with KOOZA playing here from April 7 to June 18.

Good use of the land prior to the whole development coming in! It actually underlines for me (I live within walking distance) that we South Etobicoke types will be getting a massive upgrade in neighbourhood amenities as this site gets built out. While the circus won't be here once the whole site is developed of course, it's a welcome addition before we get the new market, parkland, GO station, district library, etc., and depending upon how long it all takes to come together, I'll invite Cirque du Soliel back in 2024 if they wanna come then too!

Ten and a half years after the M. Christie's Bakery shutdown announcement and subsequent demolition of the buildings, driving by the site on the weekend, there appeared to be construction activity underway - hoped that actual the actual start of the project was happening.

Today, a parade of big rig trucks was entering and exiting the site, dumping backfill on the ground, being leveled by the on site equipment.

But just a tease - it turned out to be preparation for an event - perhaps Cirque du Soleil, or something similar.

...I guess it's better than turning it into a temporary surface parking lot as far as the human eye's can see. >.<

In fact you only have to look on post up from your own for the confirmation of the Cirque du Soleil tent!
