Oh, dear lord where to start?
Toronto is probably the worst Canadian city in the world. Why would anyone want to live in such a crowded, polluted mess? Life here in Waterloo is relaxing and you can easily have over two acres of your own land for the price of a closet in Toronto....
Not everyone shares the same views on living arrangements. Many people want less car-dependancy, and don't need an excess home and amount of land. Waterloo is quaint, but it gets stale after a while. It lacks excitement and plentiful entertainment, unlike a major city.
This is Canada, not Hong Kong, no one wants to live in 200 sq ft hell-hole hundreds of feet in the air... Why doesn't the communist Ontario government just let people live in the country and enjoy nature, it's much more environmentally friendly.
Clearly people do want to live in "200 sq ft hell-hole [apartments] hundreds of feet in the air" because, well just look at the sales. They sell out in many occasions, with people lining up around city blocks to be first in line to buy. Also, since when does the Ontario government impede people from living in the country and enjoying nature. If I recall correctly, there are still thousands and thousands of untouched acres of land to live on, as well as people already doing so. Lastly, the point about environmental friendliness is a little off; sprawl and oversized homes on big plots of land ravage the environment a lot more than building dense in urban centers, especially with newer greener building standards.
And another thing, if Toronto really wants to be 'world class' it should stop trying to please the creme de la creme liberal yuppies and build some real roads... why didn't it just tear down buildings along streets like Yonge and Bloor and build wider roads 70 years ago when it had the chance.... every real global city built 6-8 lane roads around the city long ago, but all toronto planners can do is worship ancient modes bikes and trains instead of moving into the 20th century...
Tell me, how many 6-8 lane roads do you see criss-crossing through London, or Paris. Even America's best cities like Chicago or New York have similar road widths as us, with a focus on pedestrians and streetlife. To say we should've torn down buildings to create gigantic, cumbersome roads through the densest parts of our city tells me you understand almost nothing about city building. Also, what exactly is ancient about bikes and trains? Are you saying rail transit should be obsolete, bikes for pleasure cruises, and the car is the way of the future? I think the 1950s called, it wants its ideals back.
the city is building 50 storey eyesores everywhere without building any roads or new expressways.... we need to look to the Houston model, they have some of the most headquarters of any city in North America
Eyesores, well that's subjective. Most people (including a lot of Toronto's 2.5 million residents) prefer density and urbanity, to massive roadways and seas of parking lots. I can't say a lot for Houston, but last time I checked Toronto is Canada's major economic urban centre, with a large amount of national and international headquarters and offices. Not to mention top educational, scientific, and medical facilities centred downtown.
Thinking of living in that crime-ridden ghetto makes me physically ill... they should just raze the city and start over.
Crime ridden? Ghetto? I don't even think I'll address these points, as they make me believe you've never actually been to Toronto. If being one of the safest major cities in North America makes you a crime ridden ghetto, then I'd like to know what your idea of a safe, prosporous and ideal city is.
