The Future of subway and rapid transit in the GTA

Between 3:40 - 5:00, at no point during Jennifer Keesmaat's lackluster spiel does she mention that transit should be rapid or fast.
Exactly, I was going to point that out but I wanted to to keep my post to a reasonable length. I have never gotten the sense (from day one) that Jennifer Keesmaat ever cared about transit user or even developing plan for the transit users. Her vision of things (which you can clearly see in that segment) has nothing to do with actual public transit or public mobility. I really don't know what even qualifies her as expert on public transit. Yes, she is an Urban planner, I know that, but are Urban planners really the key people we need for transit planning? to me, Transit planning is more about economics and logistics but i could be wrong. I will never forget the day (back at that time) when she stated that elevated transit lines was bad for Toronto because it creates shadows! 😁😁 Imagine that? What would she do with all the shadows created by those downtown office towers 😅

At least with David Miller can we can be thankful for what he delivered in one or two other areas. The approval to build BMO field was his baby. Without that: No U20 FIFA World cup in 2007, No MLS team in Toronto, No Championship in 2017, and No FIFA world cup in TO this summer. We owe that to David Miller.

That is a euphemism for " let's keep throwing money at the problem until it's solved"... Seems we have been doing that already on multiple LRT lines.

What is the definition of insanity again?
This is the first LRT to open. So we have not had an attempt to fix it on multiple lines so I’m not sure where the insanity is other than a whole bunch of new magical transit experts that have taken over these forums as soon as finch opened.

David Miller was the last good mayor of the city.

To be fair to Chow it's still to early to judge.

That’s really rich….many of the same people now dismissing criticism spent hundreds of pages in the Finch West LRT and Eglinton Crosstown threads praising this project and shutting down concerns or anyone who mentioned the S word. Anyone who questioned whether LRT was the right technology for Finch was told they didn’t understand transit, density, or “how cities work.”

Now that the line is open and struggling, criticism is suddenly labelled “insanity” or blamed on “magical transit experts.” You can’t gaslight people for a decade and then act surprised when they judge the project on its actual performance.

Hopefully this is the LAST LRT ever built in Toronto, and judging from the anger outside of this echo chamber, it’s very likely that will be the case.

So congratulations whatever it was you were trying to prove.

LRT is the right technology for Finch - based on the experience of other cities that are capable of running their LRTs at a decent speed.

However, if the next few months show that we are chronically incapable of operating our LRTs properly, then indeed there will be no new LRT projects launched in this city. Time will tell, very soon.

Agreed!

I find all the weather-related issues shocking. That should have been fully tested by opening. Either the weather has been worse than expected (which I doubt), or the line wasn't tested to meet weather conditions that Toronto encounters.

I hope they figure these out soon

There's nothing magical over here, unless you're implying only you can have an opinion on this subject as you feel you're an expert...

This is the first line open.. Fine.. but it will not be different for Eglinton or Hurontario... St Clair was a disaster as well... And Spadina was a shit show as well. So yeah we've been at it for a bit.. We need to consider something different..

Hurontario will be different. For one thing, stop spacing is much more appropriate- Hurontario has about the same number of stations as Finch, but is 18 kilometres versus ten for Finch.
