St Lawrence Market

TWO new restaurants coming on WELLINGTON @ Berczy Park. This one - it was going to be Char pre-covid - and the one next door "Grandma Loves You" (coffee, snacks, breakfast)
I've been watching these as well. It's great to see those gaps in the street front filling in now that the interminable construction is done (knock on wood).

According to the liquor permit I saw on the door last month, the almost-Char location at 40 Wellington is going to be something called Taberna Social. There's also a Google map link for it at https://maps.app.goo.gl/g87T3wPkV7Rd6LsJ6 which in turns links to a website related to a restaurant that was briefly open in Bracebridge. It seems to be related to the Playa Cabana chain, which has a location two doors west of this one. Curious to see what it will end up being.

Yes, some people do like the idea of adjacent parking but the BIA, the SLNA and , I think, Councillor Moise ARE in favour of a permanent closure of Market Street. I suggest that you (and others!) email Moise to ask him why it is reopening and urge him to sort this out. Councillor Moise <Councillor_Moise@toronto.ca>
Of all the sneaky places I've used to park around the market, I've never actually considered Market Street north of Esplanade before. I'm surprised there'd be that much interest in it for parking - especially given how much trouble it is to get to. Though I suppose if you are coming from the north, you might simply get lucky heading to the Market Street parking garage.

Perhaps that entire block should be handicapped parking only.

It is popular with Market merchants and some customers as its closer than the Green P but the whole idea is for a FULLY PEDESTRANISED street 365 days a year. If it is always no cars it can get better 'street furniture'

A. 33 Yonge St finishing up the new wood soffit, lighting and probably soffit heating too.
B. 49 Wellington St. E ? No permit on file. Scaffolding again? Seems like yesterday.
I’m not sure if they were moving the scaffolding from building A to B

The FlatIron had masonry problems a few years ago on the Wellington side - they now seem to be fixing the problems on the Front side. They probably do not need a building permit for this 'repair' - they may need a sidewalk occupancy permit ( I do not think these are publicly available online) - depending on exactly where the property line is on that side. There is one very obvious area.

Ah, yay, again. It does seem like yesterday that the Flatiron spent years under scaffold, but it's probably been a decade. Then there were the years of interruption for the park and sidewalk reconstruction. I hope this particular work is done before spring patio season: I'm always afraid the Firkin will throw up their arms and leave, that place really helps to animate the building in the summer.

As much as I love our few remaining old brick buildings, the process of keeping them standing safely does seem onerous. The Berkely Castle on Esplanade is another one that seems to spend as much time under scaffold as it does without. It's like a process that takes 3 to 4 summers that starts over seemingly every decade. But this is preferable to letting them crumble dangerously.

The final stage of the Wellington streetscape was actually held up for 3-4 weeks a couple of years ago because sections of the sandstone on the Flatiron overhead had fallen. They fixed it (permanently??) from Cherry Pickers and the street work re-started.

Speaking of scaffolding and sidewalks, this fencing has been up for months in front of Metro. It seems the building owner has fixed the sidewalks all around the perimeter of the building here except this one last spot. I’m guessing the ground heaving and repairs need to involve Toronto Hydro for this repair scheduling due to the underground transformer vault.
Maybe we need to get The Toronto Star fixer on this.

Yes, the fencing seems to be over the (building owned) transformer vaults for 80 Front etc. Getting these grates repaired is probably a BUILDING responsibility but they need to synchronise with Toronto Hydro and, based on work of a similar nature at our building, this takes ages as Hydro has a long list of this kind of work. The Fixer is good but I doubt that even Jack can get them moved up the Hydro priority list. and they MAY be waiting for warmer weather too,

@mburrrrr clearly laid down the law as they (Hydro or the condo??) are putting plywood around half of the hydro vault. I assume repair is imminent.
Just coincidence I guess.
35 Church St. - hydro vault repairs.
Permit issued Jan 17, 2025

Access further reduced. Be careful what you wish for or complain about. 🤔

I understand that a Dollarama is going into 98 The Esplanade - the former TV theatre/gym/homeless shelter. Not too exciting but better than staying vacant for a few more years.

Yeah, I agree with that assessment, not exciting but it will serve the neighbourhood and having it sit vacant is not good for anyone. That and the new No Frills are belated acknowledgement that a lot of people have moved into that neighbourhood in new condos over the last decade. They need boring amenities, not just fancy restaurants and coffee shops.
