Rob Ford's Toronto

Gavin:

Maybe among the converted, but that's just preaching to the choir. The video is necessary to shove in the faces of the people frothing at the mouth in the comment sections on the Sun's website and their ilk.

Actually my take is that the video isn't for the frothers - because it's pretty they won't change their minds short of a commandment from God. Work the bell curve - the questionable performance of the mayor over the past few days is what will register with the average person I think. Besides, the current state of things look pretty murky and raises a whole bunch of questions that can't be easily answered, and that pretty much guarantees the notion of some unbecoming conduct sticks around. It also highlights the risk potential high profile supporters may face associating with Rob Ford as well - like would anyone with reputation stick around and wait for the "next big thing"?

Interesting how there aren't any pre-post opinion polls out.

‘Crackstarter’ campaign hits snag as it nears $200,000 goal, editor says

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/201...snag_as_it_nears_200000_goal_editor_says.html

“We were initially made aware of the video by a tipster, who connected us with the owner of the video after we travelled to Toronto,” Cook wrote. “We've been in relatively constant communication with the tipster since then. But he has told us that hasn't been able to make contact with the owner of the video in recent days.”

So Gawker has been dealing through a middleman "tipster" who has not been able to contact the owner in the last few days. It could very well be that the owner of the video has decided to cut-out the middleman who he may not have reason to trust now that his cell phone is now suddenly worth $200,000.

Hopefully this is the explanation for the lack of communication. If the owner is smart he will approach a Bay Law firm that has an affiliate office in New York that can act as a facilitator for closing the deal.

Well, this confirms that the Star is a fool for not buying the video when it had its hands on it. The bird in the hand is now loose in the bush.

The same goes for Gawker- telling that the person that held the video was missing now dampers enthusiasm for donations. The Crackstarter now needs to convince people to continue to donate while being entirely unsure of whether or not it can deliver. No one likes uncertainty, and the odds of the Crackstarter failing have gone up quite a bit.

So....it seems the last communication with the vendor was last Sunday....yet Gawker did not make this public till this evening? That seems a bit "off" to me.

Yup, donations have slowed to a trickle. I think the Gawker update might have killed this thing.

Typically some amount of time needs to pass before you are able to state that you have not been in contact with a person for said amount of time. It would indeed be bizarre if they reported that they couldn't get in touch with him very soon after having been in touch with him

It's really too bad Gawker broke the story and scooped The Star. It's conceivable The Star would have been able to break the story with the video if this hadn't been rushed.

It's a shame because a slightly more ruthless approach would have snagged the video earlier on.

The Star and Gawker are going to get eggs tossed into their faces by the Fords if contact is not made by Sunday. Seriously, the drug trade is not a place of permanance or security- things shift all the time and participants are constantly in danger. Why leave the golden egg lying out in the open when you could have it within your castle?

Gawker wasn't planning to break the story when they did. A CNN contact for Canada called the mayor's office to ask about the video, so Gawker broke the story right away, before the mayor's office had more time to get their ducks in a row. That's how Gawker tells it, anyway.

4 days? When people are donating funds in amounts of up to $10k?
