Rob Ford's Toronto

Andray has posted an article on TVO's site:

" While Ford was always eager to dance in the streets and mug for cameras during Caribana, he had no qualms about casting votes in council against funding the parade. Ford maintained his brand of retail politics by answering phone calls from constituents and visiting them at their homes, yet ignored the wider needs of Rexdale – poor transit access, food deserts and an embarrassingly high child poverty rate – and offered no viable remedy while the neighbourhood slid into dereliction. Ford diverted development dollars to the high school where he coached football, yet blocked access for the rest of the neighbourhood to similar funds, instead staking the financial future of Rexdale on a failed casino project. Rexdale was Rob’s fiefdom, and he was loath to allow us anything not offered from his own wallet."

Interesting he is doing it at St. James - which is about as far away as his home church as it can get (locationally and symbolically). I wonder if it is protocol or someone's idea of looking importantan and legit at the very end.

Twice now you've completely misinterpreted my remarks and question re: Ford and his so-called charisma. I have not spoken about his 'humanity' or his being a good/bad guy personally or his drugs or his family. You just need to stop.
I am sorry about that.
I was, and continue to be, completely baffled by the supposed 'charisma' of the man. That is, and there is ample evidence of it, that he, personally, and without benefit of a compelling political position nor rhetorical skills, was able to generate a personality cult. It was an amazing thing. I'd like someone to explain it to me. You're obviously not going to be the person that does.

So here's a question for you -- what's wrong with my attitude towards Ford and Ford Nation? As opposed to PinkLucy's or adma's or others? What get up your nose so much about the fact that I just can't conceive of Ford Nation, and yet it existed? Why does it infuriate you so that I'm asking a question about the source of the Ford personality cult?

You're right, I'm not going to give explanations abut Ford Nation & personality cults. People much more educated and eloquent than I am have written tomes about populism and cults, spanning decades of leaders (lots of stuff on Trump's popularity out there these days). I'm sure it was discussed at length in this thread, too. Personally, I don't find Ford Nation interesting at all.

I posted Tindal's blog in reply to my perception that the "charisma/charm" thing came up in relation to various media obits. People here felt that there was "whitewashing" and "apologia" going on. While some of the obits (SUN) were ridiculous, I thought that it wasn't fair to accuse everyone of whitewashing just for bringing up a few positive points or memories about Ford. So I said "look, this guy is totally anti-Ford but met him and found something positive to say, but it's not whitewashing, so let's not paint everyone with the same brush."

I had no intention of singling you out or "targetting" your posts at all and apologize if I did.

The procession from City Hall to St. James Cathedral would involve the stopping the streetcars to let the line of cars and the hearse go by...
