Rob Ford's Toronto

McGuinty really has no right to interfere with Toronto service levels -- it's a completely different level of government. But what McGuinty does have the right to do is tell Ford that if he wants money from the province, he first needs to exhaust the revenue options that the city itself has, e.g., raise property taxes and re-instate the vehicle registration fee.

Ford is trying to play the game of reducing taxes and then getting the province to make up the shortfall. It's nakedly cynical politics. (Not that I don't think the province should be investing more in Toronto, especially in transit.)

Asking the province for money to build the Sheppard Subway, is the same as asking for taxpayers' money. It's the same pocket.

This from a mayor who avoids pubic transit, does not know the difference between a streetcar and a light rail vehicle, and needs an automobile to get a Timbit instead of walking to a library

McGuinty should de-amalgamate the city, give the money to Ford, forcing Ford to spend it in the old city of Toronto.

I really don't understand how he can ask for the money that is supposed to be the Eglinton LRT cushion when it isn't fully known how much that line will actually cost. It's a pretty brash move, but McGuinty would be an idiot to accommodate him -- if the ELRT runs over and the money is already gone, McGuinty (or whatever government after him) would look like fools.

In his campaign, he said he was going to ask Metrolinx to transfer all the money from the York Region VIVA project to his subway ... the man doesn't have any boundaries.

Apparently the Fordites are already saying that the Eglinton line will come in way under budget. Guaranteed! How do they know? Because they know! Guaranteed!

So say he gets the 650 Million plus the Federal $, he is still way short of the billions he needs for it.
True ... but without the $650, it's sounding like he loses the Federal $.

That $1-billion could be enough to build Phase 2 ... from Don Mills to Victoria Park, and pay for the detailed design work necessary to find a PPP partner for the remaining phases. Which might let him at least have a shovel in the ground during the next election - which might be all he really cares about.

just like they knew all the gravy and could balance the budget without increases in taxes, service cuts, etc .... GUARANTEED !
