Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

If there is an upload and the province widens the Linc and RHVP, I think the QEW-RHVP interchange (along with Nikola Tesla and Centennial) likely needs a re-design. Not sure what the best configuration would be, but the combination of the low speed loop ramps and required weaving to merge/exit always causes backups due to the slow/heavy trucks that are common on both The RHVP and Nikola Tesla.

September 17 satellite images show construction has started on the Highway 3 Talbotville Bypass and freeway upgrade outside of St Thomas:

Th Bradford Bypass west portion is also now clearly visible due to expropriation and lack of cultivation - this component should see major construction works start next year.

The Yonge Street overpass just north of 8th Line is already finished. I haven't been up 10th Sideroad in a while to see progress over there, though, but at least one house on the alignment has been boarded up last I saw.

Traffic getting out of Bradford is a disaster right now, between the new County Road 88 overpass to the west and some sort of construction work on Highway 11 to the east. Just the western portion of the Bypass opening up to Yonge would be a big help in giving people another way out.

Highway 413 corridor firmed up a bit.

As part of its plan to protect Ontario and support the energy needs of growing communities, the government has reached a key milestone in the Northwest GTA Transmission Corridor Identification Study. The province is proposing to reduce the boundaries of the transmission corridor and release lands that are no longer required for protection, reducing the lands held for the transmission and highway corridors by approximately 40 per cent. The transmission corridor will host major infrastructure projects that will support Energy for Generations, the government’s long-term plan to deliver reliable, affordable and secure energy to create good-paying jobs and power Ontario’s future.
...
The proposed corridor along Highway 413 is based on a study launched in 2019 to identify a viable route for future transmission infrastructure. The refined corridor reflects detailed technical analysis to identify the narrowest path capable of supporting both 230 kV and 500 kV transmission lines, while preserving flexibility for future transmission designs. The study prioritized co-location with Highway 413, minimizing impacts on natural areas, and avoiding built-up communities.

Just too a trip up to see family in Sudbury. The section as far north as Highway 9 is pretty much complete. The southbound HOV and fourth general traffic lanes are open; the northbound HOV lane is closed at Kirby, my guess is that is for the final alignment painting to get the HOV through up to Highway 9. Right now, the highway northbound loses the right most general lane just before the Highway 9 exit; really, the right most lane should continue into the Highway 9 off ramp instead.

There was also some serious construction work on 69 north of where Highway 400 ends at Highway 559 for Killbear Provincial Park, with signs warning of blasting. I was hoping it was actually work starting on twinning north towards Shawanaga First Nation and Pointe Au Baril, but the Ontario highway program says it's just resurfacing and intersection work (I guess for the industrial park).

It's frustrating that projects like Highway 7 New, Highway 6 bypass, and 69 keep getting delayed while it's full steam ahead for the 413 and Ford pushes a ridiculous 401 tunnel.

I was in Nanticoke on Thursday and decided to take HWY 3 all the way back to London. Work in St. Thomas is flying along - there is some serious digging taking place in the HWY 3 ROW, with a large amount of the dirt between the HWY 3/Centennial Avenue roundabout and the First Avenue interchange having been removed and flattened to the grade of the existing road. It's actually a bit jarring how much has been dug away already. Lots of grading activity is also taking place in the new extension corridor west of Wonderland.

The existing staged freeway in St Thomas was designed for easy twinning in mind. Yes you still gotta dig but logistically it's super simple since you don't have to build a lot of access routes and whatnot to the site. A new build like the extension west to Talbotville will take more time.

At Highway 4 and 401, the ongoing cloverleaf replacement project is completely transformative. You're going from a substandard 1950's era freeway to a modern setup with high mast lighting. It feels like a urban freeway despite being very rural.

Drove up and down the 400 this weekend as well and was going to report the same thing. I’m not happy about how the extra lanes terminate at Highway 9 right now, I hope it’s not the permanent configuration as it’s going to create a large pinch point.

It is nice to have it more or less done at least. The 400 traffic and overall highway safety has been such a disaster for so long it’s almost weird to see it actually done and widened.

Now if they can get the next part going, hopefully through Barrie..

Can anyone interpret the meaning of this "new" phase 3 the government has priposed for the hwy 6 bypass.

I dont understand what could be done at this underpass without building the new ramps for the actual bypass
Seems like a pretty useless phase for the actually bypass. They are starting to "study" in detail what this interchange will look during the construction of the bypass.

yes the continued slow progress on the whole project is very frustrating. The province needs to just pony up the cash and build the whole thing.

A reminder of what the Brock Rd interchange is supposed to look like once fully completed - Note that there is not planned to be a NB 6 > WB 401 ramp, MTO will have to build an interim one somewhere, unless they want to go and build the new 6 bypass ramp over the 401.
