^ Good question. The City's website says they have a permit (13 159724 BLD 00 BA) for the interior work they are doing on the 2nd and 3rd floors, but no mention of the rooftop. Depending on what was on the roof previously, how much area they enclosed for the stairwell, and whether they extended plumbing up to the roof, maybe they didn't technically need a permit for the roof? Or maybe they simply didn't get one.

Since that 3rd floor didn't exist a few years ago, there would have been nothing on that roof.

I don't know anything about permits and bylaws. But I do know something doesn't seem right to me.

I find it interesting that there's no mention of a rooftop here. To me, it would be a natural:

I was referring to the fact they might have roughed in the rooftop when they renovated the building a few years ago, not to a previous tenant.

Went by today. Don't think it's open yet. Sign says "Stixx Fare" with "Mediterranean Grill" or something on the facade.

I googled and came up with this in NYC. I wonder if the concept isn't the same?

Stixx finally opened today. Same basic idea as the one in NY (good find, ex-MG), but more food-court-like and basic. Was doing errands (making a run to Big Carrot for fiddleheads), realized that I'd inadvertently failed to eat any breakfast, so stopped and ate 11:30ish. For what it is, the food was good. It's basically souvlaki served in a wrap, on a plate or on a salad, with a choice of sauces and toppings. Would have been quite nice, but overly-loud Greek music made me want to leave asap. Only customer there, although it was before lunch and a few people did wander in to look at the menu/check the place out.

Speaking of which, I think Opa Opa, the 24/7 hole-in-the-wall opposite the Pape station, seems to have lived a very short life.

Exactly. Mind you, I still prefer more souvlaki places than another mediocre sushi joint.

The former location of the Mad Italian near Carlaw has had the for lease sign removed and the windows papered over.

I think that has to do with landlords demanding high rents (for long periods) which restrict a lot of types of businesses

Yes, but it's not that unusual. There are vacant premises every year, starting to appear in January, and every few years that number in a given year is a bit higher than usual. Some of it is coincidence, some of it is new competition, so of it is tough business and some of it is (as GKW) rent hikes along the strip.

Sadly, yes. Although the 400-store Ardène chain gave way to the 13-store Ten Spot. (small victories)
