Restaurant Comings & Goings

I imagine it's the same crowd that keeps all of the King W establishments going. A mix of professionals who can easily afford it, "aspiring" professionals who can't but enjoy the conspicuous consumption aspect, tourists, and people out for a big night to celebrate something and think the best way to do that is drop a lot of cash on something "unique".

Sorry if this has already been posted, but a new omazake sushi restaurant is the first retail coming to the Gloucester.

I'm old school. Just came back from a Vegas trip where I bought $4.99 USD bottles of soju from a Target store there and mixed it with whatever juice we could get and then hit the casinos where they serve "free drinks" for a tip on the side.

Damn even converting to CAD ...a bottle of soju is so much cheaper in USA vs our "cough cough" LCBO https://www.lcbo.com/en/charm-soju-liquor-40626 with the option of earning 10 aeroplan points....

One has to be careful to compare brand, size, and also similar city/region.

I just looked up the retail price, not on sale of 375ml of Charm Soju in Buffalo, NY - I get $7.34 USD; other brands varied btw $6.99-$7.99USD

Taking that first price and translating to CAD, I get $10.03 vs the LCBO price of $10.90

So there is a discrepancy, but not huge.

Sure the booze is a bit cheaper IN Vegas, but the cost of the round trip flight is ~$400; making the Soju $403.99 LOL

Yep. My parents don't drink but go to the US all the time. I give them my shopping list for cognac and scotch. I got Courvoisier VSOP recently for only 40 bucks US. It's $109.95 at the LCBO! What a scam the LCBO is.

Yes.USA is cheaper for alcohol - bought Don Julio 1942 for $155 in Florida, I think its $320 here at LCBO. Even after exchange, its only about $215... still $100 cheaper!

In light of the discussion above; perhaps some people would like to see how the LCBO price structure works:

* before anyone asks, no this is not confidential information, LOL, its freely available if you know where to look. It was provided by the LCBO to a member of the public.

Now, I'll illustrate certain effects of taxation; these are approximate.

Roughly - U.S. Federal Tax on spirits is 1/4 the Federal rate here.

Since someone used Vegas as an example, the City+State sales tax in Vegas is 8.38%, while the rate in Toronto would be 13% HST.

If we harmonized at the U.S. rates for the example above.

The landed cost drops to ~$8.12

To which you then apply the LCBO mark up of 139% to get $11.28 + $8.12 for a total of $20.40

Then we add the domestic charges for volume levy and env. .38c for $20.78

You then factor the sales taxes. Apply the lower rate of 8.38%

Which gives you a grand total of $22.32

The remaining price difference is largely the LCBO's mark-up.

That mark up in the U.S would vary widely, but likely be the range of 50% on mid-range product. (as opposed to 139%)

***

If we go back and adjust the mark-up to 50%

You lower the retail price to $18.12

Needless to say if you find a discount liquor shop, where the markup might be as low as 30% in a state with no sales tax the price would drop further still.
