The Emerson

Posted by Alexandra Grigorescu / LISTED ON FEBRUARY 1, 2013

The Emerson recently opened in Bloordale Village, lending ever more credence to the notion that this neighbourhood is on the upswing, particularly with the Whippoorwill opening up just two doors down (which means you should start trolling real estate rags for property in the area).

The Emerson is instantly cozy, and that's thanks in part to the casual service, and especially the obvious camaraderie you can glimpse in the open kitchen. The kitchen staff sport toques, and have friendly huddles between plating.

Food Spy: Fidel Gastro’s moves into Prague European Kitchen

With a final email confirming the insurance last Friday afternoon, Matt Basile has officially taken over the recently vacated restaurant space at 638 Queen St. W. (at Bathurst), where long-time pierogi palace Prague European Kitchen closed recently, just months after a reboot.

Basile, better known as the man behind Fidel Gastro’s sandwich pop-up and food-truck company, is taking the next step by becoming a first-time restaurateur. But, instead of opening a sandwich shop, come springtime he’ll be overseeing a full service, 60-seat (or so) restaurant named Lisa Marie—continuing with the Presley theme he started with his food truck, named Priscilla—serving Venetian street delicacies known as cicchetti and, of course, the handheld eats Basile is best known for.

The Ryerson residences on Church and Gerrard is converting their first floor into restaurant space.

That's good news! Church Street meeds much more retail, especially non-franchise restaurants. Considering how Church Street is so central in the core, it's amazing how under developed it remains.

A Mexican place is opening in the old Spring Rolls 'Go' location at Yonge & Charles. Could this be the beginning of the end for Noodle Alley.

Isn't it Noodle and Shawarma Alley? 13 Hayden Street (formerly the Focaccia take-out place, then two different shawarma places and then back to Focaccia before closing yet again) is getting ready to reopen as another shawara take-out. Also, is Basha gone? It's been closed the last few times I walked by.

The Angelini RistoBar in the Royal Bank Plaza food court has closed down. Hoarding is now advertising a new "market"-type restaurant called Olly.

Also, speaking of market restaurants, Richtree in the Eaton Centre is now closed and the hoarding in the old food court area is now advertising the coming new location.

A new placed called Phillys (I believe that was the name) is opening in the old Irish Nachos place on Church St. just south of Dundas. Cheese steaks the new trend?

I'll be interested to see how it faces off against the McDonald's down the street.

The Burgers Priest up here at Yonge and Lawrence is right across the street from a McDonald's, with another place called Burger Cellar pretty much next door. Priest is always busy and the spillover from people that don't want to line up actually favors Burger Cellar (from what I have heard). It would seem the McD's caters to an entirely different market. This is a rare scenario where there are 3 burger places within a 25 meter radius and all are doing very well, not sure how the Spadina situation will play out.

Given how Spadina is much busier in general you'd think better.

May not be the case though, very different demographics, many well off families in the Lawrence area.

Does anyone know when the burrito place that is taking over the old Spring Rolls takeout place opening? Their old spot at Cumberland Terrace has since closed.
