It's becoming so bizarre as to defy belief. Well on the upside, on the trade file, we have our own buffoon lined up against him, our secret weapon: Ford.

To his credit, Ford is relatively well-behaved - even boring - at this point. In any case, it's pretty self-evident what Trump truly respects is demonstration of power and ruthless authoritarianism mixed in with a heavy dose of tacky.

Probably because of the long list of times that North Korea has committed to denuclearization in some form or other. And the fact that Trump is involved.

Chamberlain was no fool, he knew he needed time. Under Chamberlain's premiership Britain undertook a massive rearmament program.

Just look at what Britain began after Chamberlain become PM in May 1937

Royal Navy:
  • 3 x King George V class battleships construction begun, 2 others begun in Jan 1937 now expedited
  • 3 x Illustrious class aircraft carriers begun, 1 other begun in April 1937 now expedited
  • 1938 Naval Programme (2xImplacable carriers ordered, plus large cruiser and destroyer programs)
Royal Air Force
  • Big investment in Air Ministry advancement and procurement
  • Spitfire development expedited, entering service 1938
Army
  • Matilda tank ordered 1938 (arguably the best armoured tank of the early war)
  • Ordnance QF 25-pounder artillery gun (one of history's best field guns and howitzers) designed and expedited
So, to be fair to Chamberlain, he was no dove or ignorant to the situation. But he had to buy Britain time to reverse the disarmament of his predecessors. Had Chamberlain not ensured Spitfire and Hurricane production was expedited, Churchill would not have had his finest hour.

And, to bring it all back to Trump, notice how the President is ramping up US armament while he's being nice to dictators.

I think there is a slight difference between the UK having to prematurely fight Nazi Germany vs. a still militarily ascendant US cozying up to tin-pot dictators one-hundredth of its' size without proven capability in intercontinental delivery (but is actively and rapidly acquiring one).

In all fairness to Chamberlain (and I'm as guilty as others of using the term), history has been mostly miswritten about him. He worked feverishly behind the scenes, as anyone familiar with aircraft acquisition and development will attest. The western establishment were in almost complete denial of what was to come, Poland, France, the UK, and many others still having cavalry units and bi-planes.

It was the behind the scenes frantic activity that set the stage for Churchill to have a bat to swing with. Barely.

Chamberlain bought an invaluable factor to the war: Time.

The entire war could have been avoided if it weren't for that treacherous Bastard. Him and Halifax should be buried. They were part of the problem of why the establishment was in denial. Didn't do anything of real consequence to help with rearmament. Ignored reports from their own agents and diplomats...except the appeasing ass-licker they had in Berlin.
Sold out allies.
Ignored facts.
Failed completely.
