Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

One problem people face with that type of path is that the trade you learn in the forces aren't recognized in civvy land in Canada. For sure, a great foundation, but there is no direct linkage. This is a solvable problem but that would require federal-provincial cooperation. A bit off topic, but couple this with the CAF rebranding itself as an 'interim career', where you do, say,10 years then go back to the economy with a marketable skill would benefit both recruiting and the economy. Right now, they still largely market themselves as a permanent career.

I don't know, a well-known local engineering firm hired a Lt. Col. in the QOR directly into a COO position about a decade back.

You should give zero fcuks what I or anyone else expected you to do. Journalism would work well in sales, PR, and communications.

If I was a young man today I’d likely go to post-secondary school for a trade or languages, or if I was smart RMC, and then join the RCN. Or, perhaps given my British birth, had I decided to return after high school, the RN.
In the 70s I graduated with a degree in the Arts. This training could afford you work in a host of entry level positions, of which I tried several. However, not finding the kind of employment I really felt good about , I became a qualified union carpenter, partly for the income and partly for a completely new experience. Later on, the communication skills honed in university bore fruit as some interesting roles in construction management opened for me . I was fortunate to have matured in a time when dabbling in various fields was possible, perhaps even valued .The luxury of discovering your "path" over time, is not available for many in this day. My generation seems to have won the lottery.

That is true but, being even older than you, I must say that at the time it did not feel like "I had won the lottery" and I think that MY parents felt THEY had had it a bit easier.

Because visiting family or going home on break are considered "vacations"?

I plan on visiting Family in Hungary next June/July and I am setting boundaries.

I thought about visiting Australia or Brazil but the cost of a hotel is too expensive for two weeks. One week is not enough to see anything when you factor in travel time.

The conclusion I came to after a two week $15000 vacation to London last year is that visiting family can save a ton.

Even if I give my cousins money it is still only costing me 5000 dollars after the flight. That's what it would cost for a two week stay in a hotel.

No doubt that is part of it but when you talk to people or look at the departures boards, sunny points south play a majority role.
My older sister takes her adult kids on vacation with her (most recently to Panama at Xmas). As does my wife's aunt. All expenses paid (by the parent).

Studies seem to show that Boomers are the big spenders (per person) on vacations, and it goes down with each generation, to where Gen Z are willing to pay about ⅓ of what Boomers do. Again, that's for the ones actually able to afford to take vacations. Most I know in those age groups can't afford any kind of regular vacation, and instead spend a much smaller amount of money on local experiences (food, tours, etc.)

Wow! I did 17 days in Europe in 2019 for around 4500 per person.
I was in London and Paris this past year for two weeks and definitely did not pay $15000 for two people. I stayed at nice places (Intercontinental at Piccadilly and a 2 bedroom air BnB in Paris)

But this is getting way off the topic of Doug Ford’s Ontario

It is interesting to see that Doug is not the only head (or future head) of a 'higher level of government" who thinks it is appropriate to interfere in the lower levels. Selections from: https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/05/business/new-york-congestion-toll/index.html

Driving into Manhattan? That’ll cost you, as new congestion toll starts Sunday

New York’s new toll for drivers entering the center of Manhattan debuted Sunday, meaning many people will pay $9 to access the busiest part of the Big Apple during peak hours.

The toll, known as congestion pricing, is meant to reduce traffic gridlock in the densely packed city while also raising money to help fix its ailing public transit infrastructure.

President-elect Donald Trump, a Republican, has vowed to kill the program when he takes office, but it’s unclear if he will follow through. The plan had stalled during his first term while it waited on a federal environmental review.

In November, Trump, whose namesake Trump Tower is in the toll zone, said congestion pricing “will put New York City at a disadvantage over competing cities and states, and businesses will flee.”

“Not only is this a massive tax to people coming in, it is extremely inconvenient from both driving and personal booking keeping standards,” he said in a statement. “It will be virtually impossible for New York City to come back as long as the congestion tax is in effect.”

I suspect that politicians use these issues to get a few votes where they often would not. No one likes paying for things that used to be free, but congestion pricing has been instituted in many other cities, with the desired result (even if some don't like it).

Why else would Albany or Washington DC want to have a say in local NYC politics??

This is getting really off topic for this thread, but from what exactly does NYC need to come back from? I've been 3 times in the last 2 years, they're doing just fine.

Foot traffic in office buildings is still well down from pre-pandemic times, but I don't think business overall is suffering in NYC. Judging from hotel prices (we were thinking of going in the fall, but were dissuaded when we tried to find a room/apartment), the tourist trade is going bananas.

Messing w/NYC has been a full-time obsession for many a New York State governor.

Less common from the Feds, but just see the exit of Byford from the MTA over having the nerve to (privately) question the wisdom of then Gov. Cuomo's interventions in the MTA.

Population decline might be considered a negative. Though how much of that is real given erroneous counts is a material question:

When looking at unemployment, and near-term City finances (current year and fiscal '25) the numbers are reasonably positive. Though there are some issues beyond that, they don't appear severe:

On NYC's office space vacancy rate (better than ours, but comparable in many ways, relatively low in class A prime, but higher in less quality space and locations)
