Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

That's an interesting question. Without knowing the production process, it seems that current plates are stamped with a single die then go into separate coating/painting streams. If there are distinct logos then you need distinct dies. I don't know how interchangeable and flexible they are.

I'm surprised they haven't tried to float a change in colour (away from 'Liberal blue') and a change to the trillium logo. Disruption for disruption's sake.

In the past, the law enforcement community has been against going to a single plate. Obviously, it limits the ability - by 50% - for the public and police to identify vehicles involved in crimes such as hit-and-run as well as automated licence plate readers. Admittedly, other jurisdictions have done it and life has gone on.

The current plates are a stamped aluminum base with a reflective decal applied on top. Only the letters and numbers are embossed, everything else is on the decal.

Well now.... that would be a business opportunity for Doug Ford to award Deco a lucrative contract to print the decals. Follow the money folks, keep it in the family!!

So, a lot like when MPPs are told when to sit and when to stand, forcing them to perform dozens of standing ovations in praise of their leader... kids and MPPs should never be trusted to think on their own.

File under: Free speech on campus--Premier Doug Ford says in today's question period of the planned student walkout, "this is about the union bosses and the teachers telling students what to do."

Doug and others underestimate the students, they must think they are impressionable little tykes who will do what union bosses tell them ... like the Von Trapp kids in the Sound of Music or something. These aren't five year-olds, they're young adults who are now getting engaged in education and political action, and many of them will be old enough to vote in the next provincial election.

BREAKING: Gilles Bisson tells legislature that the OPP anti-racketeering squad is looking into allegations of "illegal lobbying" of Premier Doug Ford's office. Former Ontario PCParty MPP Randy Hillier raised this when he was ejected from PC caucus.
I recommend they retain Taverner for....oh...he's one of the ones being investigated?

Ontario considers mandatory annual math testing for teachers

From Toronto Sun, at this link:

The Ontario government is considering to implement mandatory annual math testing for all teachers in the province.

Senior government sources have told The Canadian Press that teachers would be required to pass the test in order to continue to teach.

The test would apply to teachers at both the primary and secondary level even if the educator did not primarily teach mathematics.

The Progressive Conservative government has repeatedly promised to take measures to improve student math scores which have been declining for years across the province.

The government passed legislation Wednesday that will require all aspiring teachers in Ontario to pass a math test before receiving their licence to teach.

The sources could not immediately say what the test will look like or who will administer it, adding that the government would still need to consult with teachers and parents on the matter.

Last August, the Education Quality and Accountability Office, which administers standardized assessments in the province, said math test scores among public elementary students in Ontario have been decreasing over the last five years.

The agency also suggested that efforts by the previous Liberal government to reverse the trend haven’t worked.

The EQAO data showed that 49% of Grade 6 students met the provincial math standard last school year, down from 54% in 2013-2014. Among Grade 3 students, the EQAO says 61% met the provincial standard in 2017-2018, down from 67% in 2013-2014.

Meanwhile, 45% of Grade 9 students enrolled in an applied math course met the standard, while that figure stood at 84 for those in the academic math course. Academic courses focus more on abstract applications of concepts, while applied courses focus on the practical.

At the time, Education Minister Lisa Thompson called the results “unacceptable.” Sources say the EQAO scores, combined with feedback from parents who are concerned about the issue, are prompting consideration of the new test for all teachers.

“How can we expect our students to do the math when our teachers can’t?” a government source said.

Opposition critics have said the government should be bolstering curriculum supports and teacher training instead of imposing a test on teachers.

How about mandatory Political Science tests for MPP's?

We're looking at Doug Ford. Especially since Rob Ford, Doug's brother, dropped out of a Political Science course in university. What a mess we get when we have people without proper education.

Worth saying, it is entirely possible to have someone be a successful politician or leader without having a post-secondary education; as it should be added, you can actually have the same for teachers, though that would vary by subject and level, and is by and large not permissible in Ontario (though Community College profs often lack degrees in their field)

What's wrong with this premier (the short list), aside from the absence of respectable ethics and an attitude and tone that is both entitled and abrasive is that he doesn't value an education; and declines to do his own (quality) research Or defer to others
who far far more qualified on subjects where he is not.

As to math certification, I don't intrinsically oppose a correctly applied program. Though I have little faith this government would get it right.

It should apply only to those teachers teaching mathematics for a start; it also should not require recertification at all, unless something fundamental about math, or the pedagogy of teaching it changes.

The purpose should be to demonize teachers, nor to waste public resources, but to identify teachers who may not currently be up to teaching their assigned program, and to then either shift them to a more
appropriate program, or to provide them the courses/resources needed to be a more effective math teacher.

Doctors, teachers, lawyers, IT professionals, and most of us continue upgrading or continuing education courses to keep up-to-date with current changes in technology, professions, or the world in general. However, there are people who refuse to take extra courses because they assume they know it all. (We're looking at Doug.)
