PM Mark Carney's Canada

I was surprised the CPC didn't turf PP after single handedly blowing a huge lead just weeks before the election.
The issue they find themselves in is that, whether by design or not, the CPC is Poilievre at this point. There's been no successor-apparent in the party, and no work on any sort of opposition leadership challengers. They're snuffing out people looking to leave the party, let alone challenge from within. Seems at this point the party is more likely to crash and burn with Poilievre behind the wheel than it is to rid themselves of him. They've made their alt-right bed and they're going to sleep in it, for better or for worse.

Abacus has the Conservatives leading by 1 federally today, which is actually a decline from their previous poll with a CPC lead of 2. The topline for both Abacus and Liasion are within MOE.

Even despite this heavy CPC slant they still have Poilievre's impressions in the negative, with his negative impression reaching April 2025's all-time highs for their polling.
Abacus as you said has a CPC slant and their polling has barely moved in months, generally anywhere from a tie to CPC +3 lead.

They're going nowhere with that unelectable fool at the helm.
"Unelectable" is exactly what they said about Rob Ford right before he got elected. "Unelectable" is exactly what they said about Donnie Tinyhands Trump right before he got elected. And the fact is, PP would have been handed a supermajority had it not been for Trump messing with Canada on the eve of elections and Carney being able to tap into the 'rally around the flag' sentiment. As despicable as PP is, he is capable of winning an election.

the party is more likely to crash and burn with Poilievre behind the wheel than it is to rid themselves of him.
It's hard to recover from having joined the dark side of the force. Once you smoke crack, you never go back.

He can win, would be foolish to dismiss that possibility, it's just unlikely as of now. He doesn't have the charisma of Ford or Trump at all. We all saw how much Ron DeSantis struggled in the US with the same problem.

I think there is some confusion between "Unelectable" and "Should be unelectable" here. Clearly Ford, Trump and PP fall in the latter...

...but at this point in time if the posted poll from the previous page is to be believed, CCP are currently "unelectable" with PP at the helm if this trend continues. And for what that's worth.

They've also been purging the party of any Progressive Conservatives, and any members that don't sufficiently partake in culture wars.

^No Bonnie to steal the wind from his sails this time...

Though it speaks to the dislikeability/unpopularity of his counterpart more than anything else. You could stick almost anyone in that context and win.

Even so, it would be helpful to have a cordial relationship with the PM in that case.
What makes you think it's not cordial now? Backbenchers are supposed to poke at government policy and provide their thoughts, which is what NES is doing here.

I think it's fair to say NES has better options waiting for him at Queen's Park.

What’s Carney and Canada’s best plan to prepare for poison pills in the 2026 CUSMA renegotiation?

I think our best move is a strategy of fait accompli. Sign as many global trade pacts as we can now so they’re already in place when CUSMA negotiations begin next summer. Little known fact, the current CUSMA deal already had some small poison pills (possibly why we blocked China’s EVs), but nothing likely we’re going to see coming up.
