OLG Toronto/GTA casino proposal (where to put it?)

Ontario Place is ideal... Kinda like Edgewater Casino in Vancouver. A beautiful place downtown along the waterfront. Can't go wrong!

The Ex - it's just begging for a casino, and the site can handle additional hotels and other ancillary tourist uses. Rather save the Ontario Place for water-related uses.

AoD

Why would you put an inward looking building use that is known to suck the life out of it's vicinity (and it's patrons) in one of the most prominent locations in the city?

Just look at the devastation and hopelessness here. I don't know how they manage!

You're probably saying 'well that's Monaco, the south of France, not the shores of Lake Ontario'. Well, my response is let's build something great on our own that we can take tremendous pride in and make a showpiece instead of an eyesore. This city has the financial and intellectual capital to make it possible and I agree with AoD that the Ex is a perfect spot for it.

But CN Tower, Toronto is just too cool for such a horrendous institution that serves no other purpose then to suck money out of the good ol' people of the city.....*sarcasm intended*

And the fact is, many studies have shown that there is a link between prevalence of gambling addictions and easier accessibility. Casinos provide the type of immediate feedback that contributes to addictions in a way something like a scratch ticket or a Proline can't. Not only this, but when people gamble at a casino they spend far more than they would gambling on something like the lottery. We're talking putting houses on the line, something you just can't do with the current forms of accessible gambling without raising a red flag (try buying $1,000 worth of lottery tickets... good luck).

Proline? Lotery ticket? What fantasy planet are you on?
Do you have any clue how many billions is gambled on online casino sites. And no, I'm not referring to sports betting sites.

Well, if we were building exclusive playgrounds for the rich and famous or spies who drive Aston Martins, that would be a great idea.

....except we aren't.

In Toronto, the idea is being touted as an example of cash-grab city-building, by desperate people who have no clue how to do their job properly, or care about the consequences.

If you can't see the irony in your statements then there is no use in debating with you.

I can smell the holier-than-thou, self-righteous arrogance in that statement from here.

Sorry buddy, I don't buy the argument that all casinos, in all locations, of any kind, are dens of moral depravity and addiction. You and I completely disagree. While I find your opinions to be simply wrong, I don't judge you for having them. Therein lies the difference.

Yes because the Montreal casino was nothing more then a cash grab. It serves no purpose as a different source of entertainment for many residents and tourists. Oh btw, this is the same city that has a higher property tax rate then Toronto and a car registration tax, as well as higher user fees for many programs.

It blows my mind that people can't see that the glitz is a sales pitch. "Hey stud, forget about your belly for a moment, and the fact that you work at a boring dead-end job, you will be just as sexy as James Bond if you come in here and spend money, you high-roller! Oh, you lost? Well better luck next time cowboy."
It's an illusion people. Those fancy cars? They are placed there by the owners.

It's depressing, but not surprising that so many on this forum are rooting for a casino on the waterfront.
