OLG Toronto/GTA casino proposal (where to put it?)

OT- nfitz:

Financial shape matters - it isn't the only imperative, but it certainly can't be dismissed as casually as you did. And before you use hyperbole (extreme this, extreme that), as a state goes (single party by practice, authoritarian - not totalitarian), Singapore is relatively benign. That said, the challenges facing the city state will be interesting to watch (you can see parallels in Hong Kong as well), with a populace that is increasingly dissatisfied with the stewardship by the current powers that be. Power transfers will be one of the things that can trip it up (along with fairly dire demographic trends).

Markham said no ?? Really that's a big surprise.

Who voted yes ? the Mayor I'm sure correct ?

I knew there was some push to include it in downtown Markham (from the town) and Buttonville from other developers.

Nope, mayor voted against.

The vote was 9-4; I think it was actually closer the last time they voted!

Something smells here !

The mayor is pro anything business typically ... any idea why they voted against it ??? I'm very surprised.

Just what's in the article. I'm not surprised since this was their second kick at the can.

Markham is out of the casino game.
Wary of adverse effects on social life and civic reputation, city council including Mayor Frank Scarpitti voted 9-4 Tuesday night against any work or public consultation on a bid for a casino as part of a major convention, entertainment and hotel complex.
“I can tell you, as mayor, this is not a priority for me,” Scarpitti told council, noting he didn’t want such a project diminishing the city’s reputation for quality of life.
“I see the casino as a real blight on the city of Markham,” added Councillor Valerie Burke, echoing the thoughts of some other colleagues.
Council heard from ratepayer groups and residents who underlined that a casino would spark gambling addiction, family breakdowns, prostitution, illegal drugs and loan sharking.
“Our ‘windfall’ may just be some child’s food money for the next month,” said resident Donna Bush. “I don’t want to be party to add to more human suffering . . . There are huge disadvantages to introducing yet another vice into our town.”
Bush also produced a letter from Cardinal Thomas Collins, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toronto, who stressed that gambling dependence causes serious suffering for individuals and families.
Councillors rejected a motion from Councillor Jim Jones who sought support for the city to consider a bid for the major complex including the casino.
He wanted public consultation and some internal analysis about the economic and social impacts of such a project so council could make a decision on whether to make a proposal to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLG).
“Let’s get the ball rolling,” he said.
The OLG wants to expand gaming in the GTA after Toronto rejected the idea for its waterfront and at Woodbine racetrack in northern Etobicoke. Other municipalities are considering bids.
Some councillors including Colin Campbell, who seconded the motion, said there is nothing wrong with looking closer at the economic benefits of a casino and consulting with the public.
Karen Rea, president of the Markham Village City Ratepayers Association, said it was refreshing that the motion called for extensive public consultation by council, unlike the proposed NHL-size arena project, which has faced public criticism for a lack of transparency.
The association’s executive was divided on support for a casino, Rea noted.
But Councillor Don Hamilton questioned whether the benefits would outweigh the social downside. If council considered a pitch for a casino, it should hold a public referendum, he suggested.
“I don’t want Markham to be considered as ‘that casino place,’” added Councillor Howard Shore.

Who cares what kind of financial shape it's in. Singapore is effectively a single-party totalitarian state.

Hmm, but that's perhaps what the extreme-right wing Ford supporters want? An extreme right-wing single-party totalitarian state, where you can simply execute the crack users?

Now I'm an "extreme-right wing Ford supporter"? I learn something new every day.

Singapore has much more economic freedom than Canada, or the USA or anywhere in "extreme-left wing" bankrupt Europe.

That's where some of you want to lead the city, province, and country to..... the same mess as Europe. We're just a few years behind but getting there quickly.

As for Singapore they don't execute drug users, they execute drug dealers (involved in a certain amount of drugs or more).

Actually, this whole economic freedom = prosperity argument is simplistic - for your reference, here is the complete ranking:

http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking

And Singapore in particular:

http://www.heritage.org/index/country/singapore

Nevermind for a moment one can question the indicators chosen, I quote:

However, state ownership and involvement in key sectors remain substantial. A government statutory entity, the Central Provident Fund, administers public housing, health care, and various other programs, and public debt is equal to a year’s production for the entire economy

That's the hallmark of corporatist states - which are generally speaking not the most "economically free" arrangement there is. And then you have states like China, which are considered mostly economically unfree and yet have some of the highest growth rates.

I have read the rankings. Singapore is number 2.

And would you consider Ontario's economy "freer" than Singapore's?

This is from the World Bank:

www.doingbusiness.org/rankings

Singapore is number 1 according to them. Canada 17. Quite the difference.

Yes, we have more political freedom, but they have little political corruption. Do you have any idea what would happen to Mike Duffy there?

there is a casino in manhattan, i believe more than one.
Is there? I stand corrected. More proof then that the world wouldn't end if there was a casino in downtown Toronto.

Singapore is relatively benign.
With the luck of a benign leadership. A benevolent dictator is possibly the best government system going. But how do you do so, and keep it that way. And at the same time protect basic human rights. I'm not familiar with Singapore enough to judge too much. But how are basic human rights such as freedom of speech and gay marriage handled there?
