Next Mayor of Toronto?

No doubt Rob Fords MASSIVE win tonight sends a STRONG message to Queens Park and to Dalton McGuinty - YOUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED!

But I think that there are also VERY IMPORTANT lessons for Stephen Harper.

Rob Ford ran (in his OWN words) as a fiscally Conservative BUT socially liberal candidate.

This is what most Canadians WANT!

We want someone who will have RESPECT FOR THE TAXPAYER while at the same time could care less what happens in the bedroom.

Stephen Harper is the OPPOSITE OF ROB FORD ! He WASTES BILLIONS of OUR MONEY sending it to 3rd world sink holes like Haiti and Africa OR on Fighter jets we DO NOT NEED. I don't know if he is trying to buy votes or if he is compelled by his Christian ministry beliefs to give away OUR MONEY. On the SOCIAL side Harper is someone who WOULD try to intervene in the bedroom if he had a majority.

We NEED to have MORE politicians like Rob Ford at Queens Park and in Ottawa. Fiscally Conservative Socially LIBERAL

THIS IS A WINNING COMBINATION!!!!!

Ugh what is World Pride going to be like with a mayor who is slightly homophobic?

This would be like a minority winning in Calga... nevermind.

makes you want a muslim Harvard grad to run for mayor now doesn't it !?!
it's quite ironic that the supposed right-leaning prairie city elected someone more progressive, while TO did the opposite.

i recall a TV news article i saw this week about the mayoral candidates / elections in Ottawa.
the current mayor ran on cutting waste etc platform similar to Ford.
apparently, he had the largest deficit in history during his term.
now, a former mayor from 10+ years ago is running and he's gaining traction away from the right.

Come on fitzy, you can do better than that. Based on your belief that all Ford voters are bigots, why don't you answer your own question? Don't chicken out now.
Obviously 47% of the city aren't bigots, and I'm surprised you would suggest that. However Ford is a bigot, as is many of his core supporters - this was evidenced in the reaction at his party to Smitherman.

Why any self-respecting person would vote for such a vile bigot is beyond my comprehension.

Though why anyone would vote for a such a pathological liar is beyond my comprehension.

Yes, but the fact remains ...more votes were cast DIRECTLY for Rob Ford than any other politician in the history of Canada :)
Holy apples and oranges. Are you thick or something?

And how can someone who was campaigning on such an anti-gay message be called socially liberal? Nationally socialist perhaps, but not socially liberal.

Well, it's probably time to learn to comprehend then. People have been complaining for years about the spending.

* pathological *

Which I also don't comprehend. Taxes are generally lower in Toronto than other nearby cities. Compare a similar house south of Steeles to north of Steeles. The same value house and property size south of Steeles pays a lot less taxes than north of Steeles. At the same time you only have to look at the condition of City facilities and offices to see that there is a severe lack of spending.

The issue perhaps is that the media has been reinforcing this perception of tax and spend, instead of actually doing their job.

I fail to see where Ford could cut budget significantly, without massive cuts to services that will create a huge outcry, and then a similar anti-Harris reaction that would push council to the left for a generation.

You know something--your combination of caps and non-caps make you look like a wingnut.

Voting in Scarborough was quite different than in my time downtown. When I lived downtown, if I arrived around 7 like I did yesterday, there'd be 60 people lined up. In Scarborough, it was more like 3. I guess they need to consolidate more. Oh and the person there didn't ask to see any of my ID, which was odd. I finally asked her to take a look.

And in a strange bit of coincidence, Ford announced its best quarter in history yesterday. It slashed $2 billion from its $3.6 billion debt. Have you driven a Ford lately?

Pick a house in the heart of a burb vs. a similar house in the heart of Toronto. Taxes are usually higher in Toronto.

And of course, on the south side of Steeles, there is a huge municipal land transfer tax.

The issue perhaps is that the media has been reinforcing this perception of tax and spend, instead of actually doing their job.
If anything, the media has been beside itself the past several months, warning of the impending doom that Ford as mayor would represent.

I fail to see where Ford could cut budget significantly, without massive cuts to services that will create a huge outcry, and then a similar anti-Harris reaction that would push council to the left for a generation.
Lots of bureaucrats fail to see where budgets could be cut, and therein lies the problem. I agree there is a large risk that there will be an overcompensation and people will get disgruntled, but nonetheless the vote provides a strong message.

In any case, I think the best part of the election was that Sandra Bussin was kicked to the curb.

If he's such a "bigot", then why did the Ford do so well in getting minorities to vote overwhelming for Ford???

I'm getting so tired of the same old crap from the left when it comes to Ford or anyone else (Harris, Harper etc) who is not a lefty. For people who preach inclusiveness and progressiveness, they sure like to hate on the right. For example, CBC and The Toronto Star (both blatently biased news sources leaning so far left I'm surprised they don't fall over, proof, just watch Christopher Humes reaction to Fords win) are ok while Sun TV News is evil just because they want to bring a view point from the other side.

To me, Fords win is indicative of the shift that the common person (the silent majority who is not an activist, artist, or elitest) has had enough and voted for change. In other words, the common person who actually works hard for a living in the private sector.

I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first post here.

Does anyone know where we can see the breakdown ward-by-ward of votes for the mayoral candidates?

I've been looking, but I haven't seen it yet. I would have expected the papers to have posted that by now, but I can't find it.

So glad to have Ford in office, there is so much waste in this city and such neglect of anything north of bloor when it comes to services i'm glad things will even out some.
