Here's a shot from 1903 a few blocks north to really make you depressed:

Found a few more night shots of Yonge Street from the Ontario Archives Visual Database which are quite evocative:

Bathurst Street Bridge: To be replaced in the near future?

Mustapha: Good comparison pics of the Bathurst Street truss bridge - Will the City replace this bridge in the near-future as I recall reading elsewhere?

Charioteer and all: I enjoy those "comparison" pics - Seeing how things were
and how they are today is always welcome!

Scarborough's 'Golden Mile'

We obviously need an update here to illustrate the last 40 years.
Any aerial photographers in the crowd?

I didn't know boo about this until you mentioned it. I found an online article at spacing.ca. There are discussions afoot to renovate the southern approach. Our old girl would stay put.:)

September 2 addition.

Simcoe and Adelaide, NW corner. Then. Circa 1980s. Formerly 'Bishops Block'. The facade has been saved for reintegration. Hurrah.

Facade - boo. This city has seen way to much of this kind of throw them a bone preservation.

Let's not forget the 1885 view:

Also remember that by the time the building was demolished, there were only two bays left of the original:

On a much, MUCH larger scale:

"In 1955, Los Angeles city planners decided that Bunker Hill required a massive slum-clearance project. Thinking big, the top of Bunker Hill was cleared of its houses and street-car tunnels (one tunnel was replaced by a bridge) and then flattened as the first stage of the Bunker Hill Redevelopment Project to populate Bunker Hill with modern plazas and buildings."

.

There is a manhole cover near the northwest corner of Adelaide & University that has an 1880's date on it (IIRC). I hope it survives.

There's one at the south west corner of King and Bay, with the date 1889. Are we wise in assuming they changed the date every time the foundry made new ones though? Perhaps "1889" was some sort of "greatest hits" commemorative year, and they produced them for decades?

a little retouching

Here's a reverse view of the Harbour Commission Building taken in 1928 (from King and Yonge?) Picture from the Canada Science and Technology Museum website.

To thecharioteer: Thanks for that new view of the Harbour Commission Bldg.
I like to play with PhotoShop -- here's what a little retouching can do:
