Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

I'm also wondering if said CIBC was one of the likelier "orphans" created by the Commerce-Imperial merger in 1961, or if its lasting into the early 70s at least had something to do with its serving the Chinatown marketplace...

I 'do' remember that this branch had many Chinese employees. The CIBC had left by the time Gordon Chong used it as his election headquarters around 1981ish. My wife and I were one of his volunteers.

This property at 5933 Steeles Avenue East (Underwood House) was designated as being of cultural heritage value by the City of Toronto in 2007.
Located on the south side of Steeles Avenue East between Middlefield Road and Markham Road, the house was in place when the Decennial Census was recorded in 1891. The property was acquired by the Underwood family in 1875, with Richard Underwood as the owner between 1890 and 1907.

Along with another Heritage Home, it's been sitting abandoned for nearly 10 years on property that is still to be developed.

Sorry, haven't checked in here for a while, but I noticed that in the then period Avenue Road had no curbs in that stretch. I was once told this was because it was a provincial highway (11A). Does anyone know if this was the reason, or if it was because that part of the street was in North York vs. Toronto, or some other reason?

Thanks as always for the great material everyone contributes!
