Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Now and Then for Oct 11.

Then. 'Peel Ave. looking W from Gladstone. Mar 12, 1951.'

Now. May 2011. Nothing new except liberal amounts of siding. Note the metal framing for a new building in the left distance. See last picture below.

See below. Hard to believe this state of affairs still exists. There is several feet of water down there. This picture I took in May. I walked by a month ago and the situation was unchanged - in fact it was worse, the chain link fence had a gap in it big enough for a child to squeeze through.

On my 1928 house the original railings lasted up until 2005 when they looked decidely tatty and it was time for them to go.

This discussion brought back a scary memory of early childhood: getting my knee stuck in the porch railings when visiting my grandparents' house on Sparkhall (off Broadview) when I was about three or four. Solution: sawing part way through the opposite side of one of the rails till it eased. The crack must have been filled with "plastic wood". According to Google StreetView the railings are still there.

You might want to phone 311 and report it? (or email to 311@toronto.ca)

There was no point in taking the now south photos as usual , too many trees.

Then. 'April 24, 1913. 1464 to 1478 Dufferin Street.'

brewster: "Another beauty Mustapha. Too bad they couldn't leave the original railing's on any of the houses."

The original railings are still in place on this Donlands Ave. house after more than eighty years.

Thanks for those source photos, brewster.
The panorama created in 1906 is amazing
- particularly the original Woodbine racetrack and Ashbridges Bay before the landfill.

What a smart outfit on such a sweet boy. Perhaps he's a distinquished gentleman-about-town nowadays.. :)

I fell off a stepladder when I was four; lights out for 48 hours... no lasting damage.

brewster's pano reminds me that there is a similar treatment awaiting the island lighthouse - there many N, S, E, W, views from it around the 1914 timeframe.. all online the Toronto Archives.. just needing a photographer to get access.

Thanks Mustapha , I like to beg to get into some places. The shaft is where they hang the hoses to dry out.

The fireman who escorted me up to the top, he was a transfer just for the day, was just as amazed as I was to see all the names written on the walls or carved into the wood of all the firefighters who have served since 1905.

I launched myself off a swing into the gravel to wake up with 20 girls around me. I keep looking for swings these days.
