In 1900, streets were for people and horses.

Today, the single occupant automobile driver thinks streets belong only for themselves.

My son is watching TV and they just showed the transit system in Japan. The metro lines are extensive and clean, while the bullet train network can get you anywhere. Why can't we have nice things like that?

Because our entire country's population would need to fit into Southern Ontario. Also, our infrastructure wasn't carpet bombed into oblivion followed by a massive cash injection from the US over several decades to rebuild the economy.

Yes, and these "War On The Car" tradisionalists would have you believe that bike lanes and pedestrian zones are progressive ideas not cars.

This is very true. In general. North America isn't up to standard when it comes to rail transit. Even Russia has high speed bullet trains.

Also, John Tory needs to stop being afraid of the ghost of Rob Ford.

Isn't that where they pay "pushers" to cram people onto overcrowded trains?

Not saying they don't have good transit, just... every place has their own problems, too.

Looks like Tory will be championing a new Toronto hotel tax--estimated to bring in approximately $9 million a year. Our budget crisis has been solved...

A commercial parking levy/tax is available to the city today, and yields much more revenue than a hotel tax. It's equivalent to a 0.35% property tax increase.

That is not fair.

Japan allowed private sector to build rapid transit lines, and then gave those companies the land surrounding the lines that they built. The end result is that those private companies built massive mall-office-residential complexes at every station and throughout the whole stretch of the lines they own and operate. Meaning that people live, work and shop entirely within these complexes that these companies have built, while paying at the farebox to these companies as they travel on their rapid transit lines.

Tokyo is the only model in the world where privatization of transit has worked out, and the results are admirable.

Here in Toronto, we are not even building anything on top of stations along the Eglinton Crosstown. So @Videodrome 's question is legitimate; "Why can't we have nice things like that?"
