I've been away for awhile. It's for good reason, I promise! First, in late February, my girlfriend and I took the train to New York, where we stayed with some family friends for a few days. Then we flew to Hong Kong, where we stayed until the first week of April, with a couple of weekends spent in Bangkok and Shanghai.

While we were there I got news that I had been accepted into grad school at the University of Hong Kong, which means that, in the middle of this summer, we will be relocating halfway around the world to HK. We won't be staying there permanently --- I long ago decided that Montreal is my home, and I eventually plan to return --- but we'll probably be overseas for at least a couple of years. We'll see.

So consider these photos as an introduction to Hong Kong. (Don't worry, I still have lots of Montreal photos to post before I leave at the end of July.) These were taken during the first two weeks of March. To see more, check out my Flickr page:

Thanks for watching. Stay tuned for more.

KGT: Good Hong Kong pics!

KGT: Good photo tour of Hong Kong.
Let me mention these pics:
#3-Is that a cathouse or something else X-rated?
#22-Neat double deck streetcars and buses pictured.
#23-You can't get away from 7-Eleven Stores-we have more than 200 of them here on LI-I like a Slurpee on a hot day myself sometimes!
#24-King Kwong Street-neat name!
#41-I like that MIND YOUR HEAD sign-it gets the point right across!
#54-I thought those drinks in that machine were quite expensive and then I realized-Hong Kong Dollar!
#55-Good night pic of the City
#83-Was that young lady trying to hide from you? I would have said "hello" myself....
Again neat pics! LI MIKE

Great tour. Hong Kong provides nice examples of neighbourhoods with butt-ugly architecture but with great urban vibrancy. That's kind of what I'm hoping for with Toronto, which will never be a pretty city, but has the potential to be a vibrant urban locale. That's why seeing developments that contribute little to street vibrancy (like Spire or some of the newer Bay St condos) are such a disappointment.

Just look at this shot. Ugly as all heck but urban cool nonetheless...

Never been. Would like to go someday. Good luck with your studies and thanks for the pics. Like being there.

Hong Kong's built environment is definitely not beautiful in any conventional way, but I actually like a lot of the buildings from the 1950s and 60s. They're well-proportioned and often very graceful, with rounded corners and stylish windows. They also meet the street in a very nice way.

They're not necessarily ugly, but from the photos it doesn't look like they've been maintained well, and all the individual air conditioning units further detract from the grace.

Great pics but their missing the main attractions of Hong Kong such as the night markets, mong kok/causeway bay pedestrian areas, mid-levels, stanley and repulse bay!

Many of these photos were taken in Mongkok, actually, and there are a few from Mid-Levels (which isn't much of an attraction --- it's a mostly residential area and not too interesting at street-level) and the Temple Street night market.

Don't forget, I have many more photos coming...

Got to love the web. A fellow from Montreal posts photos of Hong Kong on a Toronto forum. Then people living in Montreal, Hong Kong and Paris, along with those from Toronto, comment. Neat!

Not sure if you're still on UT, but nonetheless, an amazing series of shots of HK's urban life!

I don't know if you're aware of HK's politics/showbiz, but the person's whose campaign poster you captured, was actually a fairly famous actor/TV star. However, he passed away in May of '08, so that should be ~1 month after you took the picture.. actually just checked, he passed away one day after you posted the picture here....
